Description
Dice is an original character from One Piece Film Gold who serves as a dealer and one of the top executives under the casino king Gild Tesoro aboard the enormous entertainment ship Gran Tesoro.
In terms of background, Dice was originally an undisputed champion in death matches held in the underworld, where he earned a reputation as an incredibly dangerous and powerful fighter. His strength was so overwhelming and he remained undefeated for so long that he eventually resigned from his position as champion because no worthy challengers remained. Approximately eight years before the events of the film, he joined Tesoro's crew and became one of his trusted subordinates.
Dice has a thickset, muscular build with an enormous torso and arms that are disproportionately larger than his legs. He wears an open black coat lined with fur that has a white stripe on the left side, black pants, and a belt with a very large star emblem at the center. His outfit also includes a large pearl necklace, a cap on his head, and black and purple brass knuckles on his hands that resemble dice. He has a blond mustache and beard, as well as a tattoo of a purple star on his shoulder.
His personality is defined by an extreme masochistic nature, as he takes genuine pleasure in receiving injuries, whether self-inflicted or delivered by an opponent. He revels in battle because it gives him opportunities to experience the sensation of being damaged by his enemies' attacks. This unusual trait is displayed when Franky punches him directly in the face with a powerful attack; rather than showing pain or anger, Dice appears to thoroughly enjoy the sensation, which visibly disturbs Franky. He also demonstrates notable loyalty to Tesoro, willingly using his own body to shield his employer from a wave of seawater during the final confrontation.
Dice's role in the story is primarily as an enforcer and as the operator of a high-stakes dice game in the VIP lounge of Gran Tesoro. He demonstrates the game for the Straw Hat Pirates by tossing dice into the air, catching them in a massive metal container, and slamming the container onto the ground. When the Straw Hats eventually win against Tesoro through the casino owner's own cheating methods, Dice engages in combat with the crew. His primary opponent is Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman of the Straw Hats.
As for notable abilities, Dice possesses immense physical strength, being capable of lifting and flipping a giant metal container filled with extremely heavy dice, breaking open such containers with only a headbutt, and swinging a massive battle axe with enough power to shatter metal. His endurance is tremendous, allowing him to repeatedly facilitate the giant dice game and withstand powerful attacks. During the final battle, Tesoro equips Dice with golden armor and a giant golden axe, which significantly enhances his attack power. Dice also has the ability to use Busoshoku Haki, a form of armament hardening that allows him to counter some of Zoro's sword strikes.
In terms of key relationships, Dice serves as a loyal subordinate to Gild Tesoro, having joined his crew years ago and remaining devoted to protecting him. He works alongside Tesoro's other executives, including Baccarat, the concierge who manipulates luck, and Mr. Tanaka, who handles internal security.
His development throughout the film reaches its climax in the battle against Zoro. Despite his formidable strength, Haki abilities, and enhanced golden equipment, Dice is ultimately defeated when Zoro uses a powerful technique called Shishi Sonson to slice through his golden armor. In his defeat, rather than expressing frustration or despair, Dice laughs and expresses that he is truly ecstatic, having finally experienced a challenge and the sensation of being pushed to his limits by a superior opponent.
