Description
In the Despair Arc of Danganronpa 3, Hajime Hinata is introduced as a student in the Reserve Course of Hope's Peak Academy. Unlike the "Ultimate" students in the Main Course who possess extraordinary natural talents, Hajime is an ordinary young man without any specific exceptional ability. This fundamental lack of a special talent is the core of his character and his personal struggle. He harbors a deep inferiority complex regarding his ordinary status, feeling alienated and frustrated as he observes the talented students around him. The ambition-less atmosphere he perceives among his fellow Reserve Course students deeply disagrees with him, leading him to often spend his time alone and isolated.

Despite his feelings of inadequacy, Hajime is driven by a powerful aspiration to become someone exceptional. His central motivation is a desperate desire to be worthy of the title "Ultimate" and to escape the label of being talentless. This ambition makes him vulnerable to the machinations of Hope's Peak Academy. He forms a significant bond with Chiaki Nanami, a member of the Main Course with the title of Ultimate Gamer. Chiaki, through her kind and straightforward interactions, begins to instill in Hajime a sense of confidence in his own normalcy, offering him an alternative perspective on what it means to have value.

However, his fragile confidence is shattered by a cruel encounter with Juzo Sakakura, the Ultimate Boxer. Juzo violently beats him and tells him he is worthless without talent. This event serves as the final breaking point for Hajime. He decides to accept an offer from the academy to participate in a secret, unethical experiment known as the "Izuru Kamukura Project". His motivation is to be reborn as the "Ultimate Hope," believing that by erasing his old, talentless self, he can become a beacon of hope for everyone. Tragically, his pursuit of hope leads directly to his own transformation into a vessel for despair. He is turned into Izuru Kamukura, a new being created through brain augmentation who possesses every talent but has lost his original personality and memories.

Throughout the Despair Arc, Hajime's role is that of a tragic figure whose story explains the origins of a key character from the games. His personal journey is the emotional linchpin for the arc's plot, showcasing how the system of Hope's Peak, which worships talent, can destroy an individual from within. His development is one of a tragic fall; he starts as a sympathetic, ordinary boy with dreams and becomes a cold, artificial genius named Izuru Kamukura, who is defined by utter boredom and detachment. As Izuru, his notable abilities are essentially all-encompassing; he is described as a genius out of the ordinary, possessing an ultimate talent in every field, rendering him capable of almost anything but emotionally invested in nothing. It is in this form that he encounters Junko Enoshima, who becomes interested in him as the ultimate expression of hope to be twisted into despair.
