Description
Hanabi Kawai is a prominent student from the Setouchi Keijo Training School, where she is recognized as the third-ranked member of the elite class. Originally from Kyoto Prefecture, she stands 165 centimeters tall and is identifiable by her short, wavy light magenta hair and purple eyes. When she becomes serious or genuinely excited during a match, her expression shifts to a creepy smile and her pupils transform into a distinctive cross-like, shining shape.

On the surface, Hanabi is typically energetic, cheerful, and sociable, with hobbies that include traveling and watching zombie movies. Despite this outgoing nature, she has a notable and frequently shown obsession with handsome men, often expressing a desire to find a boyfriend. This trait becomes a sensitive point for her, as she becomes visibly upset when others comment on her lack of romantic experience. This dichotomy between her public persona and her fierce competitive side defines much of her character; she is someone who craves normal social connections but also possesses a deep, almost predatory love for intense physical combat.

Before entering the world of Keijo, Hanabi was a talented softball player whose team won national competitions. However, this success led to a sense of isolation, as her natural physical gifts made it difficult for her to find peers who could challenge her, causing her to feel bored and alienated from the sports she played. This background as a pitcher directly informs her fighting style as an infighter. She utilizes powerful acceleration and exceptional dash speed honed from her softball days to close the distance between herself and her opponent almost instantly. Once in range, she specializes in precise, devastating attacks aimed at vital points such as the solar plexus, nape, and jaw.

Her motivations are deeply rooted in this past. She seeks a rival who can push her to her limits, a desire that is fulfilled during the Setouchi entrance exams when she faces Nozomi Kaminashi. In their mock race, Hanabi initially overwhelms Nozomi, but is shocked when her opponent withstands her attacks and begins to counter. The fierce battle that follows forces Hanabi to fight at full capacity, and she ultimately wins by a narrow margin. More importantly, she thanks Nozomi afterward, claiming she finally enjoyed a fight for the first time. This encounter transforms their relationship from a simple rivalry into a lasting friendship and mutual respect.

Within the story, Hanabi serves as a key member of the elite class and a benchmark for high-level skill. She shares a close professional and personal bond with fellow elite student Mio Kusakai, and the two are often seen together, drawing significant attention from the sports media as rising stars of Keijo. Her skills are further refined under the tutelage of the professional player Kyoko Shirayuki, who becomes her mentor. During a training camp in Kyoto, Shirayuki critiques Hanabis lack of balance, a weakness she is forced to confront and work on to improve her technique.

One of her most notable contributions occurs during the East-West War, a major team competition. Competing in the third race alongside Nozomi Kaminashi, Rin Rokudo, and Saya Kogatana, Hanabi primarily acts as a support fighter. She engages in a strategic battle against Hikari Muromachi, quickly deducing the secret behind Hikaris blinding technique, Pie the Flash, explaining that it uses the suns reflection off her oiled chest. Her role in this race is crucial to unlocking Nozomis full potential and securing a team victory.

After graduating from Setouchi, Hanabi officially becomes a professional Keijo player. She affiliates with the Kansais Kyoto Branch and continues to be mentored by Kyoko Shirayuki. Starting as a B-Rank player, she secures victories from her debut onward, quickly collecting enough points to advance to A-Rank. She later takes up residence at Garden Worth, a lodging for Keijo players, where she reunites with Nozomi and Sayaka Miyata and befriends Saya Kogatana. Her consistent growth and powerful offensive precision, particularly her Fatality Attacks as an infighter, solidify her status as one of the most promising talents in the sport, eventually allowing her to pass the preliminary rounds of the Butt Graduation Festival and reach the championship match.
