TV-Series
Description
Eriko Nagai is the younger sister of Kei Nagai and is human, in contrast to her brother who is an Ajin. She has long, dark brown hair typically styled into two braids, with matching brown eyes and thick eyebrows. Her physical appearance is that of a young girl of rather short stature. Due to a terminal illness she has suffered from since a very young age, Eriko is hospitalized for most of the series. The specific nature of her illness is never revealed.

In terms of personality, Eriko stands out as the most empathetic member of the Nagai family, especially in contrast to her brother and mother who are depicted as more cold and utilitarian. She believes in the importance of caring for other people and resents those who are selfish. Despite this empathetic nature, she is not necessarily warm or welcoming, and can be quite blunt herself, unapologetically stating her opinions. She holds her own air of confidence; although she initially fainted after witnessing graphic violence in her hospital room, she later appeared completely unfazed when speaking to the antagonists Sato and Tanaka, who had subjected her to that scene and forcefully kidnapped her. Spending so much of her life in the hospital may contribute to her valuing friendships and human connection more deeply, as she has limited opportunities to socialize.

Eriko holds significant resentment toward her brother Kei. She has observed from an early age that he tends to act for his own benefit rather than out of genuine care for others. The primary source of her resentment stems from an incident in their childhood when Kei abruptly and easily cut ties with their mutual friend Kaito. She was also upset when their puppy died and her mother referred to the animal as merely a defective piece of merchandise, with Kei explaining that this is simply what happens to sick things. She later wondered if all people die when they are defective. Despite her resentment, when her mother later explains to her that Kei is not completely uncaring but rather an overly rational person who prioritizes what he cares about most, Eriko begins to cry and admits that she is actually worried about her brother. Her brother had initially wanted to become a doctor to find a cure for her illness, though she believes he pursued this goal for his own self-interest rather than out of genuine concern.

Her role in the story primarily involves being questioned by authorities seeking information about her brother. She is interrogated by Izumi Shimomura, to whom she reveals the story of Kei seeing something invisible when they were burying their puppy. During this interrogation, she is present when Tanaka attacks the room with his IBM, causing her to lose consciousness. Later, she is kidnapped and questioned by Sato and Tanaka, but she shows no intimidation, telling them that she does not resent Kei for being an Ajin, though she still considers her brother to be uncaring toward others.

Regarding key relationships, her mother is Ritsu Nagai. Eriko views both her mother and brother as too cold and rational, and seems hurt by her mother's pragmatic words about the dog. Despite this tension, her mother spends considerable time with her in the hospital and comforts her when she expresses concern for Kei. Regarding Kaito, the childhood friend Kei cut ties with, Eriko thinks about him often and sometimes blushes when doing so. It is implied she has, or previously had, a crush on him, though how much contact they have maintained since childhood is unknown.

In terms of development, an early sentiment Eriko expresses is that Ajin should not be treated as humans and deserve severe punishment. However, her perspective evolves over the course of the story. She comes to feel pity for Ajin to some extent, and by chapter 59, when news broadcasts show images of her brother, she is shown reacting with surprise, suggesting continued emotional investment in his fate.

As a human, Eriko possesses no supernatural abilities like the IBM or immortality that Ajin have. Her only notable abilities are her strong will and her capacity for emotional insight, as she is able to see through her brothers rational exterior to recognize his fundamental nature, even if she initially misinterprets it as pure selfishness.
