Description
Barbara Parker is a student attending Luna Nova Magical Academy, where she is frequently seen in the company of her best friend, Hannah England, and the illustrious Diana Cavendish. She is a girl of average stature with completely straight, waist-length black hair and teal eyes, and she wears the standard dark blue uniform of the academy.
In terms of personality, Barbara is initially presented as a mocking and somewhat smug individual, particularly toward the protagonist, Atsuko Kagari, known as Akko, and her friends. She looks down on Akko for her lack of magical ability and her childish admiration for the entertainer Shiny Chariot. Alongside Hannah, she often teases Akko and her circle, referring to them with unkind nicknames. However, despite this haughty front, Barbara is not particularly brave. She and Hannah are easily frightened by monsters and dangerous situations, showing a cowardly side that Diana occasionally finds exasperating. Beneath this exterior, Barbara harbors a secret enthusiasm for the Night Fall series of novels, a passion she initially hides because Hannah dislikes the books.
Her primary role in the story is as a loyal companion and assistant to Diana Cavendish. Barbara, along with Hannah, constantly flatters Diana for her studious nature and famous family lineage, acting almost as sycophants. She follows Diana into perilous situations, such as dungeon quests, despite her own fears, showing a deep-seated loyalty. Her key relationships are defined by this trio. Her friendship with Hannah is the closest; they are almost always together and share similar interests and disdain for non-witches, though Barbara keeps her love for Night Fall a secret from Hannah for fear of being mocked. Her relationship with Diana evolves from one of mere admiration to genuine care, as seen when the two are devastated by Diana's sudden departure from the academy. Her dynamic with Akko shifts over time; while she begins as a bully, she and Hannah later express uneasy gratitude to Akko for helping Diana return to Luna Nova, admitting it was something they could not accomplish themselves.
Throughout the series, Barbara undergoes a notable development. Following the events surrounding the Cavendish family, she and Hannah stop mocking Akko and her friends with the same frequency. The most significant change in her character is her growing confidence in her own interests. By the end of the series, she is no longer afraid to admit she is a fan of Night Fall, and she is seen openly reading and discussing the novels with Lotte Jansson, a girl she previously looked down upon. This moment suggests a new, more genuine friendship formed on shared interests.
As a witch in training, Barbara possesses standard magical abilities, including the use of a magic wand and a flying broom. She is notably skilled at flame magic, capable of creating fireballs, though this can be counterproductive against creatures that feed on magic. She also demonstrates proficiency with transformation spells, such as the one she uses to turn Akko's broom into a scooter during a race.
