Description
Kaito Shiratori is an esper and a minor character who first appears in the context of the Awakening Lab, a facility led by Kenji Mitsuura that gathered young psychics. He is introduced alongside his twin brother, Daichi Shiratori, as one of the children invited to the lab to develop their supernatural abilities. Kaito is the younger of the two twins.
In terms of appearance, Kaito shares many physical traits with his brother, including wearing glasses and having thick eyebrows. His expression is often described as dull, and his facial features are distinguishable for being more angular and square compared to Daichi. He is an adolescent with black, ear-length hair. His personality does not receive extensive focus, but he initially presents as somewhat reserved and dependent on his twin for his powers to function effectively.
Kaito's primary role in the story is as a supporting esper whose abilities are centered on telepathy. Together with his brother Daichi, he shares the psychic power of mind-reading. In the beginning, Kaito required the presence of his twin to perform any psychic feats, with their combined power allowing them to perfectly read each other's thoughts. Over time and under the guidance of the more experienced esper Teruki Hanazawa, Kaito undergoes development and grows in power, eventually becoming capable of operating alone. This training enables both brothers to extend their telepathic abilities beyond their own connection, allowing them to read the minds of other people as well.
Kaito's key relationship is with his twin brother, Daichi Shiratori, as their powers were originally intertwined and functional only when used together. He is also connected to other members of the Awakening Lab, including Ritsu Kageyama, and later comes under the tutelage of Teruki Hanazawa, which is crucial for his growth as an esper. His development marks a transition from a shared ability to a more independent use of his telepathic powers. Beyond combat or psychic feats, his abilities serve a more subtle and communicative function in the narrative. Later in the series, during the events surrounding the Telepathy Club, Kaito and Daichi are called upon by Ritsu to assist in a mission to contact aliens. While they can only perform telepathy between themselves, they demonstrate the ability to emit a telepathic signal or white noise that, when boosted by a powerful esper like Shigeo Kageyama, can be used to attract other telepaths. This shows a practical application of his abilities in a non-combative, collaborative context.
