Description
Corteo is a central character in the anime 91 Days, serving as a poignant counterbalance to the main protagonist's path of vengeance. A childhood friend of Angelo Lagusa, who later adopts the alias Avilio Bruno, Corteo represents the innocence and human connection lost to the violence of the mafia world.

Corteo grew up in poverty, his father having been a low-ranking member of the Moreno family who was killed in a dispute, leaving Corteo to care for his sickly mother. The Lagusa family took them in as a result of this tragedy, creating a bond that made Corteo and Angelo as close as brothers. From a young age, Corteo displayed notable intelligence and a wealth of knowledge, enjoying reading difficult books, including those on science. This intellectual curiosity is demonstrated in a childhood memory when he explains to Angelo's younger brother that a candle flame is not hot because it is the paraffin burning, though he himself is too timid to test the theory.

As an adult, Corteo is a slender young man with dark skin and grayish-black hair, which he usually wears slicked back under a hat and framed by his glasses. He works as a bootlegger, distilling alcohol to sell in order to save money for medical school. Because of his deep-seated hatred for organized crime, a feeling born from witnessing its destructive impact on his family, he refuses to sell his high-quality product to any of the local mafia families, preferring to supply only his friend Cerotto's bar.

Corteo's personality is defined by his honesty, meekness, and straight-laced nature. He is poor at lying and possesses a timid side, which makes him fundamentally unsuited for the violent world of the mafia. Despite his hatred for this world, he agrees to help Angelo when his childhood friend returns to Lawless after a seven-year absence, drawn back into his life by a promise of brotherhood made on the night of the Lagusa family murder. His primary motivation is not revenge, but a desire to protect his friend and to survive the chaos so they can both escape and live honest lives, ideally with Corteo attending medical school.

In the story, Corteo acts as the last remnant of Angelo's former life and his only genuine emotional connection. As Angelo descends further into his role as the cold, calculating Avilio, Corteo becomes increasingly distressed, serving as a moral compass and a tangible cost of the revenge plot. His role evolves from a reluctant ally providing logistical support to a liability, as his fear and desperation grow. At one point, he is captured by the sadistic gangster Fango and, in a fit of desperate violence stemming from his circumstances, manages to kill his captor before being recaptured by the Vanetti family. His deepest wish is to turn himself in to the authorities, hoping to take the blame for the crimes and secure a future for Angelo, a plan that directly conflicts with Angelo’s all-consuming mission.

Corteo's most significant relationship is with Angelo/Avilio. Their bond is the emotional core of the series for him; he refers to them as brothers and remains fiercely loyal even as he watches his friend transform into a stranger. This loyalty ultimately leads to his demise. In an attempt to prove Avilio's loyalty to the Vanetti family and protect his own cover, Nero Vanetti forces Avilio to shoot Corteo. In his final moments, Corteo offers no betrayal or anger, only a small, familiar hand wave to his friend, showing his complete devotion and signaling his acceptance of his fate as part of Angelo's tragic path. His death leaves Avilio completely isolated, with nothing left but the revenge he vowed to achieve.

His notable abilities include his intelligence and his skill as a bootlegger, creating alcohol so well-regarded that it becomes a valuable commodity that even the mafia seeks to control. This skill is the initial key that allows Angelo to gain an audience with the Vanetti family. His knowledge from his youth also proves practical, as his childhood understanding of paraffin in candles later aids in the creation of Molotov cocktails.
