Description
Howard Link is an inspector serving the Central Office of the Black Order, directly under the command of Malcolm C. Rouvelier. A young man of German nationality, he is nineteen years old at the time of his introduction and stands at 172 centimeters tall with a slim build. Physically, he is distinguished by his long blond hair, which he typically wears tied back in a low ponytail or braid, as well as two distinctive vertical marks on his forehead. He also wears a rosary given to him by Rouvelier.
Link is a core member of Crow, an elite and highly secretive squad that operates under the direct command of the Central Office. Agents like Link are trained from a young age in advanced combat techniques and refined magical arts, making them formidable assets even among the Order's exorcists. His official assignment is to serve as the personal inspector and constant observer of Allen Walker. Central's leadership suspects a deep and dangerous connection between Allen and the Fourteenth Noah, a figure of immense power and mystery, and Link's primary duty is to closely monitor the young exorcist and report all of his activities back to Rouvelier.
In terms of personality, Link is characterized by an unwavering commitment to rules, procedure, and his duty. He is a sober, rigorous, and highly disciplined individual who approaches his work with a stiff and impersonal formality. Polite to a fault, he nevertheless maintains an emotional distance and can come across as blunt or cold, preferring direct and factual communication. He is known to dislike jokes and frivolity, a trait that leads fellow exorcist Lavi to teasingly nickname him Two-Spots, much to Link's chagrin. Despite his stern exterior, Link has a notable fondness for sweets, a hobby he seems to have adopted from his superior, Rouvelier. He is a skilled baker, and one of his first gestures toward Allen is presenting him with a homemade pumpkin pie. His motivations are deeply rooted in loyalty. He holds Rouvelier in extremely high regard and idolizes him, viewing his commands as absolute and his cause as just Link's personal sense of honor compels him to follow orders without question while also showing passive, genuine concern for the well-being of those under his protection, even if he does not express it openly.
Link's role in the story begins as a watcher, a shadow constantly at Allen Walker's side, but it evolves significantly over time. Initially, the relationship is strained with Link functioning as an intrusive reminder of Central's distrust. He is present for many of Allen's subsequent missions, including the investigation in Paris involving the thief known as G and an incident at the Hearst Orphanage, where his combat skills become crucial for survival. Through these shared ordeals, Link begins to develop a sense of camaraderie with Allen. He sees firsthand Allen's selfless and determined nature, and this challenges his purely objective role. His key relationship is, therefore, a complex and shifting one with Allen Walker, moving from a mere inspector to a reluctant protector and, eventually, to someone who genuinely wants to see him succeed against his dark fate. His other critical relationship is with his superior, Rouvelier, to whom he remains fiercely loyal even as his personal feelings begin to create an internal conflict between his orders and his growing respect for his charge.
Throughout his character arc, Link undergoes substantial development. He was originally an orphan living on the streets before being recruited and trained by Central. Having known nothing but this life of discipline and shadowy operations, his mission to monitor Allen becomes a transformative experience. Reports initially suggested that Link perished during an encounter with a powerful entity known as Apocryphos while helping Allen, an incident that left him with significant memory loss. However, he survives and returns with a new, more complex mission from Rouvelier: to win the trust of the Fourteenth Noah, the very entity inside Allen, so that Central might use its power for its own goals. This places Link in a paradoxical position where he must support the Noah within Allen while hoping that Allen himself can overcome that same fate. This experience forces Link to look beyond his black-and-white worldview of rules and orders, causing him to privately question his superiors and develop a desire to see if a person can truly choose their own future.
As a member of Crow, Link possesses a wide array of notable abilities that do not rely on Innocence. His primary physical weapons are a pair of retractable blades hidden within the sleeves of his coat, which he can deploy with great speed and precision. He is an exceptionally agile and dexterous fighter, capable of powerful strikes that can cut through debris and block attacks from high-level akuma. Beyond his physical prowess, Link is highly skilled in the use of mystical seals and talismans. He has demonstrated several powerful techniques with these seals, such as Shibari Bane, which creates a barrier or binding to slow and restrict a target, and uses talismans for explosive attacks or to generate protective barriers. These abilities, combined with his tactical intelligence and relentless dedication, make him a formidable asset in the battle against the Millennium Earl, even as his own loyalties are put to the ultimate test.
