Description
Fugaku Uchiha is a significant supporting character in the narrative of Itachi Shinden, serving as the head of the Uchiha clan, the captain of Konohagakure's Military Police Force, and the father of both Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha. As the patriarch, he is depicted as a man of considerable authority and expectation, responsible for the welfare and political standing of his entire clan. Physically, he is noted to have short, dark brown hair, dark eyes, and distinctive tear troughs under his eyes, which give him a perpetually stern and serious expression. In keeping with his leadership role, his typical attire includes the standard green vest of a jonin, often accompanied by a dark blue cloak with white diamond patterns, or a simple kimono bearing the Uchiha crest on the back.
Fugaku's personality is defined by his unwavering focus on the clan's interests and his role as a strict, demanding father. He is portrayed as a composed but severe leader with high expectations, rarely offering praise and only being impressed by significant achievements. While he projects an image of a dedicated konoha ninja seeking harmony between the village and his clan, internal resentment festers beneath the surface. He is deeply embittered by the village's decades-long mistrust of the Uchiha, particularly after the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attack, which led to the clan being isolated and monitored on the village's outskirts. This resentment drives his primary motivation: to rectify the Uchiha clan's political marginalization. Consequently, he becomes the mastermind behind a planned coup d'état to overthrow the village leadership, believing that negotiation with the ruling elders, led by the Third Hokage, is futile.
Within the story, Fugaku’s role is that of a tragic patriarch caught between his duty to his family and his duty to his clan. He grooms Itachi, his prodigious eldest son, to be the successor and a link between the Uchiha and the village, even pushing Itachi to join the Anbu to act as a spy for the clan. However, this plan backfires, as Itachi instead becomes a double agent for the village, reporting the Uchiha’s plans to Konoha's leadership. This creates a profound rift between father and son, as Itachi loses hope in his clan's cause and Fugaku, in turn, shifts his attention to his younger son, Sasuke, seeing him as a last hope for the family's legacy. His relationship with Mikoto, his wife, appears to be one of shared burden and understanding, as they face their fate together in the story's climax.
Key relationships shape Fugaku's character arc. His relationship with Itachi is central and complex; initially, he is proud of Itachi's genius and positions him as the clan's future. However, as Itachi’s pacifism and disillusionment with the clan grow, Fugaku becomes frustrated and views Itachi's actions as wayward and treacherous. In contrast, his relationship with Sasuke is more distant for most of Sasuke's childhood, with Sasuke constantly seeking his stern father's approval that is more readily given to Itachi. Only later, when hope for Itachi fades, does Fugaku begin to directly mentor Sasuke, teaching him the clan’s signature Fire Ball Jutsu and offering him rare words of encouragement.
Fugaku's development is most poignantly illustrated in his final moments during the Uchiha Clan Massacre. When Itachi comes to kill him and Mikoto, Fugaku reveals that he has awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan, a legendary and powerful dojutsu. Despite possessing this awesome power, which he claims could control the Nine-Tails, he chooses not to fight his own son. This decision is his final act of development; he acknowledges Itachi's choice and the path he has taken. Rather than engaging in a battle that could kill Itachi, Fugaku kneels, reaffirms that he is proud of his son, and entrusts Sasuke’s future to Itachi’s care before allowing himself to be killed. This moment reveals that beneath his stern exterior was a father who, despite their differences, loved his children and understood the tragic necessity of the situation.
Regarding notable abilities, Fugaku is established as an exceptionally powerful ninja. His prowess was so renowned that he earned the nickname Wicked Eye Fugaku, a reputation that spread fear among enemies of Konoha during the Third Shinobi World War. His talent is explicitly compared to the likes of Minato Namikaze and the legendary Sannin, and his subordinates bitterly protested his not being nominated for the position of Fourth Hokage. He was a master of Fire Release techniques, capable of performing the Great Fire Ball Technique to an immense scale. As a member of the Uchiha clan, he possessed the Sharingan, and in the anime adaptation, it is shown that he awakened the advanced Mangekyo Sharingan after witnessing a close friend sacrifice himself in the war. With this Mangekyo, he was able to cast a powerful genjutsu that even Itachi, a master of the art, acknowledged. It was this power that made Itachi wary of confronting his father directly, though Fugaku ultimately chose not to use it to defend himself.
