Description
Chisame Nakano is a character who joins the central cast of Bakuon!! as a first-year student at Okanoue Girls' High School, becoming the newest member of the school's Motorcycle Club. She is fifteen years old and is notably petite, standing at just 144.8 centimeters tall, a physical trait that significantly shapes her personality and her relationship with motorcycling. She is the daughter of a famous motorcycle racer and is herself a highly skilled and talented champion in the world of minibike racing, having been active on racing circuits since a very young age.
Despite her prodigious talent on a racetrack, Chisame has a deep-seated complex about her short stature, which she believes is a major obstacle to riding standard motorcycles on public roads. She is extremely sensitive about her height and initially refuses to have anything to do with street-legal bikes, constructing a series of justifications and sometimes even telling lies to avoid confronting the issue. Her core belief is that a motorcycle's seat height is a critical performance element, meticulously calculated by the manufacturer, and she resists the idea of making any modifications to a bike to make it easier for a shorter person to ride. Consequently, she had confined herself to riding only on racetracks, where she never needed to put her feet down, and would argue that motorcycles should not be ridden on public roads at all.
In terms of personality, Chisame presents a stark contrast to many of the other energetic and outgoing members of the club. She often speaks in hushed tones and typically wears a gloomy or tired expression, which is accentuated by her downturned eyes and her brown hair tied in twintails. She is not good at speaking up for herself and can be easily steamrolled by the assumptions of others, particularly regarding her experience with street riding. Her reluctance and quiet demeanor hide a desperation born from her inability to ask for help, which eventually leads her to seek instruction from her classmate, Hijiri Minowa.
Her primary motivation for joining the Motorcycle Club is not to display her racing skills but to overcome her insecurities and learn how to ride on the road. The club members convince her that being short is a common issue for many female riders and show her the modifications they have made to their own bikes to suit their statures, which helps her begin to move past her initial resistance. This marks the beginning of her character development as she transitions from a solitary track racer to a member of a group learning the specific rules and techniques of street riding.
Chisame's role in the story is to join the main cast as a kouhai or underclassman, bringing a new dynamic to the group. She represents the archetype of the competitive racer, which is distinct from the general enthusiasts and beginners already in the club. Her relationships with the other characters are central to her development. She is close to Yume Sakura, the younger sister of the club's main protagonist Hane, as they enter the school together. The other club members, including Onsa Amano, Rin Suzunoki, and Hijiri Minowa, act as her senpais, teaching her not just how to handle a bike on the street but also helping her confront and dismantle her own self-imposed limitations. Her development is also subtly tied to the club's history, as her mother is revealed to be an old friend of Tazuko, a former member of the school's previous Bike Club from decades earlier.
Despite her expertise in racing, Chisame faces significant struggles when attempting to ride a standard motorcycle. Having only ridden on circuits, she is unfamiliar with basic road safety and traffic laws. During her licensing test, she fails to perform mirror checks, does not know how to operate the turn signals, and is confused by the street bike's shifter, which is the reverse of what is used on a racetrack. This confusion causes her to shift down instead of up, leading to a wreck. This inexperience highlights a notable aspect of her abilities: while she is a virtuoso on a racetrack, she is a complete novice on public roads. She rides a Honda NSF100, which is a minibike designed for racing, as well as a Honda PCX 150 scooter. Her helmet is also distinct, featuring specialized holes designed to allow her twintails to pass through.
