Description
Kōichirō Kashima is a central character in All Out!!, serving as one of the key players on the Jinkō High School rugby team. A third-year student, Kashima stands out immediately due to his relatively short stature compared to typical rugby forwards, but this physical trait belies his immense competitive drive and technical skill on the field.

Kashima’s background is defined by his long-standing devotion to rugby. He comes across as serious, pragmatic, and intensely focused, often acting as a steadying presence for the more impulsive members of the team. Despite his calm and collected exterior, he harbors a fierce ambition and a deep-seated frustration with his own physical limitations. This inner tension fuels his meticulous approach to training and gameplay. He is not a player who relies on raw power or size; instead, he compensates with sharp tactical awareness, precise positioning, and an almost obsessive work ethic.

His primary motivation is to prove that a smaller player can compete at the highest level of high school rugby, specifically by helping Jinkō reach the national tournament. This goal is personal: Kashima has spent years honing his craft and feels the weight of his final year as a third-year student, knowing that this is his last chance to make a mark. He is driven by a desire to leave a legacy and to validate his style of play against larger, more naturally gifted opponents.

In the story, Kashima serves as the team’s starting openside flanker, a position that requires speed, agility, and relentless pursuit of the ball. He is one of the squad’s on-field leaders, though he leads more by example than by vocal command. His role becomes particularly important in mentoring the newer players, especially the protagonist Kenji Gion, whose raw enthusiasm and lack of rugby knowledge initially clash with Kashima’s disciplined mindset. Over time, Kashima learns to appreciate Gion’s energy, and Gion in turn learns to respect Kashima’s dedication.

Key relationships define much of Kashima’s arc. His connection with fellow third-year player Irie Hitoshi, the team’s captain and hooker, is especially significant. While Irie is more overtly emotional and charismatic, Kashima serves as a quiet foil and a strategic anchor. The two share a deep mutual respect built over years of playing together. Kashima also forms a notable bond with the team’s other small but skilled player, Mutsumi Hachiōji, often serving as a mentor figure. His interactions with the larger and more physically imposing players, such as Takuya Sekizan, highlight his struggle to assert himself despite his size.

Kashima’s development throughout All Out!! centers on his gradual acceptance of the team’s collective strength. Initially, he carries a heavy burden of individual responsibility, feeling that he must personally overcome every obstacle due to his limitations. As the season progresses, he learns to trust his teammates more, allowing himself to rely on their support rather than trying to do everything alone. This shift makes him a more effective player and a more complete leader, one who understands that rugby is fundamentally a team sport.

Notable abilities include his exceptional tackling technique, low center of gravity that makes him difficult to offload, and remarkable stamina. He is one of the fastest players on the team over short distances, allowing him to reach breakdowns quickly. His rugby IQ is among the highest in the series; he reads opposing offenses effectively and often directs defensive alignments from the flank. Though he lacks the raw power of a prop or lock, his tenacity and technical skills in rucking and stealing ball possession make him a constant nuisance to opponents.
