Description
Pina Co Lada is a central figure in the anime GATE. She is a princess of the Saderan Empire and the 19-year-old daughter of Emperor Molt Sol Augustus and his concubine, Countess Nell. Because she was born to a concubine and stands low in the imperial line of succession, the imperial court initially did not take her seriously. She has two brothers, Zorzal el Caesar and Diabo el Caesar, both of whom were candidates to succeed their father as emperor.
Pina is the founder and leader of the Rose Order of Knights, a predominantly female order composed of noblewomen of the Empire. Originally, the order served as a ceremonial color guard and decorative unit within the imperial army and was never intended for actual combat. The order saw its first real battle at the Siege of Italica, when rogue allied soldiers became marauders and attacked the merchant city; there, the knights proved both their combat skill and their loyalty to the Empire and to their princess.
In appearance, Pina is a young woman with long, vivid crimson hair and matching reddish eyes, and she carries herself with a striking, noble bearing. When performing military duties or appearing in public, she typically ties her hair back for practicality.
In personality, Pina is intelligent, pragmatic, and defined by a strong sense of duty and noble pride. Early in the conflict between the Empire and Japan, she recognizes the enormous gap in strength between the two sides and realizes that the Empire cannot win through military confrontation. Rather than cling to imperial pride, she works to protect her homeland by pursuing diplomacy, learning about the Japanese, and pressing for negotiation instead of continued war. She is compassionate toward her own people and deeply devoted to her knights, whom she treats with respect and for whom she is willing to risk herself. The anime portrays her as composed and less confrontational than her manga counterpart, while the manga shows her taking a more active part in combat.
Her role in the story is largely that of a bridge between the Saderan Empire and the Japanese forces. She works to end the fighting through negotiation and becomes a key political voice in the empire's peace faction, standing against the warmongering elements at court, including the faction loyal to her brother Zorzal. After Zorzal's failed coup and the rescue of Pina and the Emperor, the city of Italica becomes the temporary seat of the legitimate imperial government, where she helps keep the empire together. Her relationship with the Japanese officer Itami Youji is central to her storyline: the two develop a working bond built on mutual respect, even though her serious and dignified manner is frequently tested by his informal and seemingly unmotivated behavior. Her efforts play a major part in creating an understanding between the Empire and Japan and in laying the groundwork for a lasting alliance.
In terms of abilities, Pina is a capable commander and tactician more than an exceptional individual fighter. She is a competent swordswoman, but her real strengths lie in leadership, observation, and diplomacy. She is a keen analyst of situations and people, able to adapt to unfamiliar cultural settings and negotiate under pressure. Her most notable achievement is transforming the Rose Order from a decorative unit into a disciplined and dedicated fighting force, and later using her position and credibility to steer her nation toward survival through peace and reform.
