Description
Futaba Odagiri is one of the three main characters of the series and serves as the energetic and friendly center of her friend group. She is a high school girl who has transferred to Chuo Girls High School at the start of her first year, a change that sets the story in motion. Physically, she has short, brown hair that characteristically sticks out at the ends, giving her a lively appearance. Standing at 158 centimeters tall, she has a good figure, which is notable given her most prominent trait: a truly enormous and seemingly insatiable appetite. Despite consuming vast quantities of food, she never gains weight, a fact that amazes her friends.
On the surface, Futaba is cheerful, outgoing, and very easy to get along with. Her positive attitude and lack of pretense allow her to make friends quickly, as demonstrated when she befriends her future classmates Teru Hayama and Yoko Nishikawa on her very first day at the new school. She is often considered the most grounded and normal among the trio, yet her high energy levels and enthusiasm can sometimes lead her to drag her friends into wild and funny situations. She loves to eat and is very caring, often sharing her food or cooking for others. However, she has a notable and distinct fear of ghosts and scary stories, as she feels she cannot fight back against supernatural entities. In contrast, she claims not to be afraid of aliens, joking that she could simply punch them if necessary.
Her primary motivation revolves around friendship and the simple enjoyment of daily life, particularly when food is involved. Her huge appetite is not just a quirk but a defining aspect of her history; at her previous school, she was known as the Champ because she held many eating records and consistently won food challenges against others, including boys. This reputation follows her and creates a friendly rivalry with another character who constantly tries to beat her at eating contests, only to fail. Her love of food is matched by her talent for preparing it, as she is an excellent cook, specializing in home-style cooking, and is often relied upon during home economics class. This contrasts sharply with her poor skills in sewing and her notoriously terrible singing voice, which is described as being so tone-deaf as to be almost unrecognizable.
In the story, Futaba’s role is that of a catalyst and the social glue of the main trio. She quickly befriends the black-hearted class representative Teru Hayama and the formerly rich but now poor Yoko Nishikawa, forming the central group that navigates the comedic and heartwarming events of the series. Her key relationships are with these two girls. Her friendship with Teru began on her first day, and through Teru, she met Yoko. Their contrasting personalities create much of the show's dynamic, with Futaba often acting as the energetic id to Teru’s calculating superego and Yoko’s struggling ego. She also has a cousin, Sakura, who is more girly and serves as a contrast to Futaba’s slightly tomboyish nature.
Regarding her development, Futaba remains a fairly static but reliable character throughout the series, acting as a consistent and cheerful presence. While other characters experience more noticeable growth, Futaba’s journey is more about deepening her existing bonds and navigating the small changes of school life. For instance, in her second year, she remains in Class 3 while Teru is moved to a different class, marking the first time she is separated from her best friend during school hours. This change forces her to adapt and further solidifies her independent yet friendship-focused nature. She also shows moments of self-awareness, such as attempting to straighten her hair because she feels slightly embarrassed by its unruly, sticking-out ends or trying to act more girly on occasion, though these attempts rarely change her fundamental, food-loving personality. Her notable abilities extend beyond eating and cooking; she is also surprisingly good at predicting which questions will appear on school tests, which allows her to maintain above-average grades despite not being a dedicated studier, and she is fairly athletic.
