Description
Kengo Ujii is an exorcist who holds the position of Genbu, the Black Tortoise, among the Twelve Guardians, the most powerful exorcists on Tsuchimikado Island. He is also the current head of the Ujii House, a family renowned for its expertise in barrier techniques. Physically, Kengo is a tall man with sharp green eyes and spiky green hair, which he keeps styled up. He is always seen wearing a pair of glasses. His typical attire consists of a black uniform beneath a green yukata-style cloak. In the past, before a tragic incident that claimed the lives of many students, his hair was styled differently, combed down rather than spiked. The same event left him with a large scar on his back, which he sustained while shielding his close friend, Kankuro Mitosaka.

Kengo's personality is a mix of irritable pragmatism and deep-seated loyalty. He is famously miserly and has a strong fixation on money, often calculating expenses with an abacus or demanding payment for his services, even from fellow exorcists. For example, he once charged 10,000 yen for a t-shirt, citing the shipping and handling fee. This greedy demeanor frequently surfaces as his primary motivation for taking on assignments. However, this harsh exterior conceals a profound sense of guilt and care, especially regarding his history with Kankuro. His annoyance at Kankuro's post-traumatic despair stems from a desperate wish to see his friend return to his former self. His frustration is so powerful that it once drove him to try and manipulate the young exorcist Rokuro into revealing Kankuro's weaknesses, hoping to force a change.

Kengo's role in the story is intrinsically linked to his position as a Guardian and the head of his house. The Ujii family is responsible for maintaining the powerful barrier that separates the human world from Magano, the world of the Impurities known as Kegare. As the family head and strongest barrier user, this monumental task largely falls to him and his Shield Knights. This duty makes him a cornerstone of Tsuchimikado Island's defense.

His most significant relationship is with Kankuro Mitosaka, the Seiryu, or Azure Dragon, of the Twelve Guardians. They have been close friends since childhood. Kengo, who as a boy had a weaker personality and once got lost in a forest unable to move without his glasses, greatly admired the strong and brilliant Kankuro, affectionately calling him Kanchan. A past mission ended in catastrophe when a powerful Kegare attacked, using children as hostages. Kengo's desperate attempt to shield Kankuro resulted in his own back injury, but many others, including the students, were killed. Following the incident, a guilt-ridden Kankuro became deeply depressed, a change that disappointed and angered Kengo, causing a rift between them.

Over the course of the narrative, Kengo's development is centered on reconciling with his past and his friend. His desperation to heal the void left by the accident eventually leads to a reconciliation with Kankuro, with Kengo stating that the void inside him will never be filled if Kankuro does not try to recover. When Kankuro finally regains his former self, Kengo rejoices, and their friendship is mended.

In terms of abilities, Kengo is celebrated as the strongest defensive and barrier spell caster among exorcists, a title befitting the head of the Ujii House. His primary techniques involve enchanting his signature abacus. One of his foundational skills is Jin no Kijun Zekka, an enchanted barrier that automatically defends against any attack from Impurities. For offensive purposes, he can use Jin no Kikkyo Senpaku, a technique where he pours out water that is then propelled through a target and reflected off multiple mirrors to strike repeatedly. Another ability is Jin no Kijo Rasenso, which lets him throw silk threads at high speed to form a net to trap opponents. His most powerful form is the Gentei Bukyu Mystic Gear Equip, which transforms his appearance. In this state, his hair turns light, he wears a face mask, and his body is covered in articulated armor with mechanical, tortoise-like legs. In this form, he can execute devastating techniques like Jin no Kisho Bakujo Maten Koro, which creates a massive dome of shields to imprison the target, and Jin no Kidan Senpaku Mugyo no Kagami, a powerful barrier-based attack.
