OVA
Description
Matsumae is a ghoul who serves the Tsukiyama family, one of the most influential ghoul families in Tokyo. She is first introduced in the OVA Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto, which focuses on the early relationship between Shuu Tsukiyama and the half-ghoul Kaneki Ken. In the story, Matsumae works as a teacher at Seinan Gakuin High School and is the homeroom teacher of Shuu Tsukiyama, a role that allows her to keep a close eye on him while maintaining a human cover. Her service to the Tsukiyama family extends back to Shuu's childhood, and she has been a constant, protective presence in his life.

Physically, Matsumae is a young woman with short, chin-length black hair and distinctive near-black eyes with very little visible white sclera. Her demeanor is consistently calm and professional, even under extreme pressure such as a confrontation with Commission of Counter Ghoul investigators. She retains a composed, almost aristocratic bearing that mirrors the Tsukiyama family's own sense of dignity.

Her motivations are driven by unwavering loyalty to the Tsukiyama family and a deep, almost maternal protectiveness toward Shuu. She is willing to fight and die for their cause. This loyalty is not blind; she exercises independent judgment in combat and strategic situations, but her emotional attachment to Shuu sometimes influences her decisions.

In terms of abilities, Matsumae possesses a Koukaku-type kagune. It manifests as two tentacle-like appendages that resemble tree branches, which she wields with grace and precision. She also has a rare ability to detach portions of her kagune to create a durable barrier that can block pursuit. This barrier is similar in nature to the RC Walls seen elsewhere in the series and lasts longer than typical detached kagune pieces. Her combat style combines offense and defense effectively, and she is shown commanding groups of ghouls in battle, indicating leadership and tactical skill.

Matsumae's role in the story is primarily as a guardian and advisor to Shuu Tsukiyama. In Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto, she supports him from the background as he navigates his early encounters with Kaneki. Later, in Tokyo Ghoul:re, she plays a more active role during the Tsukiyama Extermination Operation, where she fights against CCG forces to protect the family. She is ultimately killed by the ghoul investigator Nimura Furuta during that operation, dying with her loyalties intact.

Her character development is subtle; she remains consistent in her devotion and composure, but her death highlights the cost of her loyalty. Key relationships include her bond with Shuu Tsukiyama, whom she has known since childhood, and her position as a senior attendant among the Tsukiyama household staff, where she is referred to as the room chief or general manager by other servants. She interacts respectfully with other family members but holds a particularly strong, personal duty toward Shuu.
