Description
Lise Hohenstein is a central figure in the anime Schwarzes Marken, introduced as a former East German military officer and intelligence agent who serves as a TSF pilot. She holds the rank of Oberleutnant and uses the callsign Schwarz 9. She is the step-sister of Theodor Eberbach, and was believed to have been killed by the Stasi three years prior to the main events, after she and her parents were captured during a failed attempt to defect to West Germany. In reality, Lise was taken alive by the Stasi, brainwashed, and conscripted into the Werewolf Battalion, serving under the command of Beatrix Brehme. She grew up in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, with her parents, Thomas and Marlene, who were playwrights. Like them, she wanted to work in theater to bring smiles and dreams to people in a dark world.

Lise is a tragic figure whose personality is shaped by her traumatic past. Having been raised in captivity since her teens, she endured sexual abuse and enslavement, and was forced to spy on, track, and murder innocent citizens in order to survive. Her primary motivation is a deep, desperate wish to be reunited with her only remaining family, her step-brother Theodor, which is the one thing that keeps her going. This longing is conflicted by the brainwashing and conditioning she has undergone, making her both a victim and an antagonist.

In the story, Lise is initially assigned to the 666th TSF Squadron as a reinforcement pilot, which immediately places her under suspicion as a Stasi spy. Her true allegiance is revealed when she captures most of her former squad-mates during an ambush, exposing her role as an agent of the Stasi. This act positions her as a direct antagonist to the 666th Squadron throughout much of the narrative.

Her key relationship is with Theodor Eberbach, her step-brother. Their bond is the emotional core of her arc. She is also connected to Beatrix Brehme, her superior in the Werewolf Battalion, and to the other members of the 666th Squadron, whom she both fights alongside and later betrays. Lise undergoes a tragic development arc from a presumed-dead family member to a brainwashed enemy agent, and ultimately to a fallen adversary. She is killed by Theodor in a joint ambush involving the 666th Squadron, the resistance group Grosser Bar, and the Nationale Volksarmee. As a TSF pilot, she is a capable combatant, having previously been dispatched for service in Eastern Europe, and her intelligence training makes her a skilled spy and infiltrator. Her physical appearance is notable for her very long blonde hair and blue eyes, and she is often seen in military uniform.
