Description
Midori is one of the main protagonists of the anime Divine Gate. She is a sixteen-year-old girl with short green hair and green eyes. On the surface, she appears bright, cheerful, and kind-hearted, with a pure and caring disposition. However, beneath that exterior, she carries a deep sense of guilt and self-blame stemming from a past incident involving her childhood friend, Elena. This unresolved trauma drives her primary motivation: to reach the Divine Gate in the hope of reuniting with Elena and finding answers about what happened. Unlike many who seek the Gate for power or to reshape the world, Midori is driven by a personal desire to recover lost memories and understand the truth shrouding her world.

Midori is a member of the World Council, the governing body that maintains order after the realms of the living, heavens, and underworld became connected. She is also a student at the academy run by the Council, where she trains as an Adapter—a person born with unique elemental abilities. Her power is associated with wind, and she wields a staff-type drive called Fonshen. Midori is noted for her sharp intelligence and expertise in magic, making her one of the Council’s most capable members despite her youth. In combat, she fights as a frontline warrior whose strength increases under emotional stress and life-threatening circumstances.

Her role in the story is that of a central protagonist. Alongside the fire user Akane, she is tasked with recruiting the reluctant water user Aoto to the academy. Throughout the series, she works closely with Akane and Aoto, as well as other Adapters and the Knights of the Round under the leadership of Arthur, to seek the Divine Gate. She is a valuable team member, often using her intelligence and magical abilities to solve problems and overcome obstacles. Despite her strong and sometimes distant demeanor, she cares deeply for her friends and is willing to sacrifice for them.

Midori’s key relationships include her bond with Akane, with whom she shares a cooperative and trusting dynamic, and her growing connection to Aoto, whose tragic past resonates with her own. Her most significant relationship is with her lost friend Elena; the memory of Elena is the emotional anchor that compels Midori to pursue the Gate. Over the course of the series, Midori undergoes development as she confronts her fear and self-imposed blame, learning to move forward and reconcile her bright outer image with her inner pain. Her journey is marked by a struggle to accept that the path ahead is not straight, and that her pure-hearted nature can sometimes inadvertently hurt others.

Notable abilities include her wind-based elemental powers, which allow her to manipulate air currents, and her proficiency with the staff drive Fonshen. She is also a capable strategist and possesses a calm analytical mind in tense situations. Her power grows rapidly under emotional duress, making her a formidable fighter when protecting those she cares about.
