Description
Karma Akabane is a student in the third year of Kunugigaoka Junior High School, assigned to Class 3-E. His birthday is December 25th, making his zodiac sign Capricorn. He has a blood type of AB and stands around 175 centimeters tall with a weight of approximately 60 kilograms. He is easily recognized by his distinctive red hair and sharp, pale eyes, which can appear mercury or gold in color. He typically wears the school uniform but with a black blazer that sets him apart from his classmates. Seven years after graduation, he grows considerably taller, reaching 185 centimeters, and adopts a more swept-back hairstyle.
His parents, who work in finance and are described as free-spirited, travel frequently and are rarely at home, leaving Karma to live alone for most of his middle school years. Due to their affection for Indian culture, they gave him the unique name Karma, a fact he personally appreciates despite its unconventional nature.
Karma is portrayed as highly intelligent and a natural prodigy, possessing exceptional academic and physical abilities that have historically allowed him to succeed with minimal effort. This innate talent fostered a fixed mindset, where he believed he was inherently superior and did not need to study or work hard like others. He is known for his mischievous, cunning, and somewhat sadistic personality. He has a lazy demeanor when uninterested but possesses a strong, playful sense of mischief. He enjoys provoking others, playing tricks, and exploiting psychological weaknesses, yet he also harbors a strong, if unorthodox, sense of justice. Despite his violent reputation, he typically does not resort to violence without a reason.
Karma was originally a student in the main campus's D class, a high achiever capable of being in the top A class. His transfer to the marginalized End Class, or E Class, was the result of a suspension. He intervened to defend an E Class student from a bully, injuring a high-ranking student from A Class in the process. When the teacher involved blamed Karma and prioritized protecting the reputation of the elite student, Karma felt deeply betrayed. This event led to his placement in Class 3-E and solidified his profound distrust of teachers, whom he now saw as hypocritical and untrustworthy. From that point, he developed a desire to metaphorically "kill" any teacher who betrayed his expectations.
His central motivation initially is to prove his superiority and validate his worldview by successfully assassinating his new teacher, Koro-sensei. Upon joining Class 3-E, he became the first student to successfully injure the near-invincible octopus-like being, showcasing his lethality from the start. However, Koro-sensei recognized Karma's potential and his deep-seated issues. Through unwavering support, patience, and by literally "catching him when he falls" during a reckless assassination attempt, Koro-sensei began to break down Karma's defenses, teaching him the value of hard work, trust, and emotional connections.
Within the class, Karma holds student number 1 and is often referred to by his classmates as the "Chuunibyou" (adolescent delusions of grandeur). Among all the boys, he is considered the most physically attractive by the girls. He serves as a key strategist and one of the most formidable fighters, often taking on a leadership role in battle plans, although he is described as being more suited to being a参谋 (staff officer) than a charismatic leader. His key relationships include his close but complex friendship with Nagisa Shiota. They were friends in their first two years of school but drifted apart after Karma became aware of Nagisa's terrifying hidden potential. Their relationship is marked by rivalry and mutual respect, culminating in a decisive physical confrontation over whether to continue trying to kill Koro-sensei, which ultimately strengthens their bond. He also has a notable friendship with Okuda Manami, a girl who specializes in poisons; the author has stated she is someone Karma can talk to about anything. He also has a dynamic with the boisterous and less intelligent Terasaka Ryoma, whom he frequently teases, a behavior that evolves from genuine ridicule to an odd form of endearment.
Throughout the series, Karma undergoes significant development. After experiencing his first academic failure, dropping from second to thirteenth place due to overconfidence in his natural abilities, he learns humility and the importance of diligent study. This experience causes him to shift his mindset, leading him to work hard and eventually achieve a perfect score of 500 points, beating his rival, the principal's son Asano Gakushu, for the top rank in the entire grade. His violent and solitary nature gradually gives way to a greater capacity for cooperation and genuine friendship. He learns that victory earned through teamwork and effort can be more rewarding than winning alone with ease. In the end, he participates in killing Koro-sensei, completing his "graduation" from the class.
Karma's abilities are among the highest in Class 3-E. He possesses excellent reflexes, high combat skills, and is proficient in both close-quarters and long-distance assassination techniques. His true strength lies in his strategic mind and his ability to manipulate situations and opponents. He has a talent for observation, allowing him to quickly learn and replicate techniques, such as those demonstrated by the government agent Karasuma. He excels at creating battle plans and taking command during crises. After graduating, he goes on to attend law school at the University of Tokyo and enters the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry as a government official. He states his ambition is to become a "good bureaucrat who can truly save people when disaster strikes".
One of his most iconic quotes encapsulates his initial philosophy toward educators: "I've always wanted to try killing a 'teacher.' What would it be like?"
