Description
Alain is a significant character in the Pokémon XY & Z anime, known for his role as a primary rival to the series protagonist, Ash Ketchum, and as the champion of the Kalos League. He is a tall, slim teenager with messy black hair and blue eyes. His typical attire consists of a black leather jacket over a blue shirt with a white undershirt, paired with baggy gray pants and black boots. He also wears a pale blue scarf that is designed to resemble the flames from the mouth of his partner Pokémon, Mega Charizard X, and fingerless gloves.

Alain is introduced as a calm and stoic individual who shows little emotion, focusing his attention almost entirely on Pokémon battles. His initial drive is a relentless pursuit of strength, and he despises losing, a trait that became particularly pronounced after an early defeat. Despite his reserved and often silent demeanor, he possesses a deep care for those close to him, especially his best friend, Mairin, and does not wish to see them suffer. This protective instinct is a core part of his personality, even as he struggles to express it. His obedience to the villainous Lysandre stems from a sense of obligation, as Lysandre provided him with the Mega Ring and Charizardite X Mega Stone, tools essential for his quest to master Mega Evolution.

Before his journey to uncover the secrets of Mega Evolution, Alain worked as an assistant to Professor Sycamore in the Lumiose City laboratory. It was Sycamore who encouraged Alain to pursue his quest. His path becomes intertwined with Lysandre, who gives him the means to Mega Evolve his Charizard. Alain travels across the Kalos and Hoenn regions, battling other Mega Evolution trainers. During this time, he is reluctantly followed by a young trainer named Mairin, whom he initially considers a burden but soon grows to respect and protect. A pivotal moment in his backstory is his defeat at the hands of the Elite Four member Siebold, which solidifies his desire to become stronger.

Alain's primary role in the main XY & Z series is that of a rival to Ash. Their first battle is a decisive victory for Alain, whose Mega Charizard X defeats Ash's Greninja. This encounter sparks a mutual respect between the two trainers. Despite his rivalry with Ash, Alain is secretly working for Lysandre and Team Flare, helping them capture the Legendary Pokémon Zygarde in the hope that the research will help cure Mairin's comatose Chespie. This internal conflict drives much of his story. He ultimately enters and wins the Kalos League, defeating Ash in the finals, but his victory is overshadowed by the revelation of Team Flare's true, destructive plans. Feeling betrayed and used, Alain turns against Lysandre and joins Ash and his friends to stop the organization's scheme.

Alain's most important relationships are with Mairin, Lysandre, and Ash. Mairin is his closest friend and the person he most wants to protect; her sadness over her injured Chespie becomes his primary motivation for working with Team Flare. His relationship with Lysandre is complex, built on manipulation and a shared interest in Mega Evolution, ultimately leading to a profound sense of betrayal. His rivalry with Ash is transformative. Through their battles and interactions, Alain begins to question his own path and learns that strength is not just about winning, but about the bonds between a trainer and their Pokémon. Ash's unwavering spirit inspires Alain to change.

Over the course of the series, Alain undergoes significant development. He begins as a power-driven, isolated trainer, easily manipulated by Lysandre's promises. After the defeat of Team Flare, he is consumed by guilt and depression over his unwitting role in the crisis. However, with encouragement from Ash, he accepts Professor Sycamore's offer to return as his assistant, signaling his turn toward a path of redemption and a more balanced understanding of what it means to be a Pokémon trainer.

As a trainer, Alain's most notable ability is his mastery of Mega Evolution. His partner, a Charizard, can Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X, gaining immense power and the Fire/Dragon typing. His Charizard is exceptionally strong, capable of defeating multiple other Mega Evolved Pokémon, including those belonging to Elite Four member Malva. Alain's battle style is calm and strategic, complementing his stoic personality. His known Pokémon team includes Charizard, a Metagross, a Tyranitar, a Weavile, a Bisharp, and an Unfezant.
