Description
Professor Oak, whose full name is Samuel Oak, is a Pokémon professor and researcher from Pallet Town in the Kanto region who appears throughout Pokémon the Series, including in Pokémon XY & Z. He is regarded as one of the most renowned researchers in the Pokémon world and is generally considered the best in his field. He gained recognition at a young age after publishing a research paper on Pokémon when he was twenty, and he later helped invent the Pokédex, the device trainers use to record information about the Pokémon they encounter.
Oak's background began not in the laboratory but on the road. As a young man, he was a competitive Pokémon trainer and, even earlier, a kind of observer who collected Pokémon for battling while sketching them. A formative experience occurred when he was about ten years old, when he rescued an injured Celebi from a hunter and was accidentally carried forward in time, meeting a young Ash Ketchum during the ordeal before returning to his own era. Eventually, he set aside competitive battling to devote himself fully to research, established his laboratory in Pallet Town, and started a family. His grandson, Gary, later became a Pokémon trainer in his own right. Oak keeps numbers of starter Pokémon, including Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, in his laboratory to give to new trainers, and it was he who reluctantly provided Ash with Pikachu after Ash arrived too late to receive one of the usual starters.
In personality, Oak is warm, friendly, and approachable, with a steady curiosity about all things relating to Pokémon. He can be absent-minded, at one point even forgetting the name of his grandson, yet his knowledge of Pokémon remains consistent and reliable. He also has a poetic side and enjoys composing haiku, sometimes letting his verse interrupt whatever task he is doing. His approach to science is balanced by a sentimental and philosophical nature, and he shows great kindness toward Pokémon, frequently taking in injured or abandoned creatures and caring for them at his lab.
Oak is motivated by a desire to learn as much as possible about Pokémon, including their behavior, habitats, and evolution, and by a commitment to guiding the next generation of trainers. In Pokémon XY & Z, he continues to serve as a mentor and support for Ash from afar, offering information and advice about the Pokémon and situations Ash encounters on his journey. He also hosts a regular segment at the end of episodes in which he presents a particular Pokémon or topic, shows related clips, and explains notable details about it. Within the larger series, his role includes giving new trainers their first Pokémon and Pokédex, caring for the Pokémon Ash sends back to the lab, and appearing in person on occasion.
His key relationships center on Ash, toward whom he acts in a nearly parental way, having set Ash on his journey and remaining a constant source of encouragement and counsel. He is the grandfather of Gary, Ash's early rival, and gave Gary his first Pokémon; while he can be strict with Gary, he also takes pride in his grandson's accomplishments. His lab is staffed with aides and assistants, and he has a granddaughter as well. In his younger days, he shared a close competitive history with Agatha, who later became a member of the Elite Four, before he left battling for research.
Oak's development reflects a shift from active competitor to scholarly mentor. His childhood encounter with Celebi shaped his appreciation for the bonds between people and Pokémon, and his move away from being a watcher toward formal research shows a deepening commitment to understanding Pokémon scientifically. Even though he no longer competes, he retains strong practical knowledge of battles and strategy, and he is capable of defending himself or others when necessary. His notable abilities include his vast expertise on Pokémon, his part in developing the Pokédex, and his talent for explaining complex topics in an accessible way. He also keeps his own Pokémon, including a powerful Dragonite, and demonstrates a natural rapport with the creatures under his care.
