Description
Kirei Kotomine is a central character in Fate/Zero. He is a priest of the Holy Church and a former member of the Eighth Sacrament, a specialized agency that handles relics and heretical objects. He stands at 193 centimeters tall and weighs 82 kilograms. Kirei is the son of Risei Kotomine, a senior priest who acts as the supervisor for the Holy Grail War, and was raised from a young age to be his father's successor.

Kirei is defined by a profound and unshakeable internal emptiness. Despite his religious upbringing and a life dedicated to discipline and prayer, he is unable to feel genuine satisfaction or joy from acts that most would consider virtuous or beautiful. As a young man, he engaged in harsh, self-punishing training in an attempt to correct what he perceived as a spiritual flaw, but these efforts only caused his father and peers to admire his apparent piety more deeply, exacerbating his internal conflict. He is outwardly stoic and dutiful, yet he is continually searching for an answer to the fundamental question of his own existence, a search that defines his actions.

His primary motivation in Fate/Zero is to understand his own nature. At the outset, he participates in the Fourth Holy Grail War not because he desires the Grail, but because the Grail selected him as a Master, a fact he finds puzzling given his lack of a wish. He is initially assigned to assist the magus Tokiomi Tohsaka, becoming his disciple in magecraft and agreeing to a strategy that uses his Servant, Assassin, as a spy. However, Kirei becomes fixated on another Master, Kiritsugu Emiya, whom he suspects shares his own hollow interior. This obsession leads him to violate his orders multiple times to seek out Kiritsugu. Under the influence of Tokiomi's Servant, the heroic spirit Gilgamesh, Kirei is gradually guided to accept a disturbing truth: the only thing that brings him a sense of fulfillment is the suffering and despair of others. This realization, which he terms "pleasure" or "joy," becomes his ultimate goal.

In the narrative of the Fourth Holy Grail War, Kirei begins as a seemingly obedient, if troubled, ally to Tokiomi, whom he ultimately betrays and murders from behind with the Azoth sword given to him as a parting gift. His key relationships are therefore deeply adversarial or manipulative. He views Kiritsugu Emiya as his rival and the one person who might provide the answer to his emptiness, leading to a violent and personal conflict. He forms a partnership with Gilgamesh, who acts as his corruptor and eventual co-conspirator. He also cynically uses the desperate Master Kariya Matou as a tool, orchestrating a sequence of events that leads to the mental destruction of Tokiomi's wife, Aoi. His history includes a marriage to a terminally ill woman named Claudia, which he entered hoping to feel normal love, but her eventual suicide only served to reveal his true, predatory nature to himself.

Kirei experiences a significant development over the course of Fate/Zero. He transitions from a man in denial about his own twisted soul to one who fully embraces it. After his father is killed, he inherits a vast number of command seals, symbols of his continued role in the war. In the final stages, after the Holy Grail's contents are released and cause a great fire, Kirei is fatally wounded by Kiritsugu. However, the corrupting black mud from the Grail fills the hole in his chest, replacing his heart and resurrecting him. Witnessing the resulting inferno and devastation, he feels a deep sense of joy, confirming his nature and setting the stage for his role in the subsequent story, where he resolves to see the world engulfed in this same hell.

As a combatant, Kirei is an exceptionally powerful human. He is a master of Bajiquan, a form of Chinese martial arts, which he combines with the physical reinforcement of magecraft to devastating effect. His primary weapons are Black Keys, a type of long, thin blade used by the Church's agents to combat spiritual entities. He is also highly skilled in the Church's sacraments, particularly the baptismal chant, which functions as a powerful anti-spirit magecraft. During the Fourth Holy Grail War, he is at the peak of his physical ability, capable of holding his own in a direct fight against Kiritsugu, who uses time-manipulation magic to move at superhuman speeds. He also learns healing magic, a skill he developed in the aftermath of his wife's death. A notable personal quirk is his love for extremely spicy food, especially mapo tofu, which has led to his nickname "Mapo Tofu Priest" among fans.
