Description
Maiya Hisau is a character whose existence is defined by her function as an extension of Kiritsugu Emiya, serving as his assistant during the Fourth Holy Grail War. Her origins lie in a war-torn nation where she was conscripted as a child soldier and raised in an environment completely stripped of humanity. During this time, she endured sexual assault and gave birth to a son, from whom she was separated, her child’s fate unknown to her. It was on a battlefield that Kiritsugu found and rescued her, giving her the name Maiya Hisau for the purpose of creating false identity documents, as her real name is unknown even to herself.

Her traumatic upbringing permanently shaped her personality, preventing the development of a normal sense of self. Consequently, Maiya views her entire being as belonging to Kiritsugu. She considers herself his tool, a part of his machinery, making the question of love or affection meaningless; as one description puts it, asking if she loves Kiritsugu is like asking if internal organs love the brain. Her demeanor is cold, professional, and distant. She dresses entirely in black, rarely smiles or shows emotion, and projects an air of someone who has no strong personal identity. However, there is a hidden, almost contradictory side to her personality: Maiya is a secret and devastating fan of sweets. She is known to frequent dessert buffets alone, consuming large quantities of cake with an expressionless face, a behavior that has become an urban legend among shop clerks and which she herself would be ashamed to have discovered.

Her role in the Fourth Holy Grail War is that of a support asset for Kiritsugu, who has retired from active work as a Magus Killer after marrying into the Einzbern family. She handles reconnaissance, gathers intelligence, and prepares the weapons and safe houses necessary for his operations. Her stated purpose is to be the auxiliary machine that allows the machine known as Kiritsugu Emiya to function more efficiently. In the field, she is a capable soldier and killer, skilled enough to be called a user of deadly magecraft. While her formal magical abilities are only slightly better than those of a novice, she compensates with extensive combat experience and the mindset of a professional assassin who can turn any object, no matter how crude, into a lethal weapon. Her signature weapons include a Steyr AUG assault rifle for sniping and a Glock 17 pistol as a sidearm. She also displays a talent for manipulating low-level familiars, particularly bats, which she equips with small CCD cameras to conduct surveillance that bypasses traditional magical countermeasures.

Key relationships define her actions throughout the war. Her bond with Kiritsugu is the central axis of her existence. They share a sexual relationship, but it is devoid of conventional romance or emotional intimacy. For Kiritsugu, this physical relationship serves as a rehearsal for the ultimate betrayal he plans to commit against his wife, Irisviel von Einzbern, allowing him to steel his nerves for the act of sacrificing her to complete the Holy Grail. For Maiya, this arrangement is simply another way she serves as his tool, a dynamic she accepts without question. Her relationship with Irisviel is more complex. Initially uneasy with each other, they develop a mutual respect. Irisviel recognizes Maiya’s utter devotion to protecting Kiritsugu, while Maiya comes to understand Irisviel’s role and even shows her a degree of care, such as when she agrees to hide the truth of Irisviel’s deteriorating condition from Saber.

Maiya’s development, such as it is, is a slow and subtle process of acknowledging her own humanity. Throughout the war, she participates in several brutal acts, including sniping Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald and Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri after Kiritsugu forces them to break their magical contract, as well as kidnapping Sola-Ui and cutting off her hand to use as a hostage. In her final mission, she is assigned to protect Irisviel. During a conversation just before the end, Maiya reveals her past to Irisviel, including the existence of the child she was forced to bear. Irisviel, in turn, encourages her to live on, to find her real family and her true name. This moment represents the first time Maiya is genuinely urged to consider herself as a separate person with a future. Shortly after, they are attacked by the Servant Berserker disguised as Rider. While trying to protect Irisviel from being abducted, Maiya is dealt a fatal wound. She dies peacefully moments later, after Kiritsugu arrives and holds her, her final expression one of satisfaction as she fulfills her purpose, her body disappearing without a reward.
