Description
Ayako Yamada trains as a preparatory student at the Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts, aiming for a career as an actress in an all-female troupe. Despite being recognized as one of the most skilled singers in her prestigious Centennial Class, Ayako is timid, shy, and suffers profound distress over societal and professional expectations regarding her weight. This pressure nearly drove her to abandon the school.

Her lifelong dream of performing musume-yaku (female) roles, supported by her family, led her to enroll at Kouka. However, she consistently battled low self-confidence and feelings of inadequacy compared to her peers. A critical incident occurred when her ballet teacher, Tachibana, criticized her weight using derogatory language. This triggered a severe eating disorder characterized by cycles of binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting. The disorder culminated in physical collapse during class and a deep emotional crisis, pushing Ayako to the brink of quitting her ambitions entirely.

Her trajectory shifted when the school's music teacher, Onodera, intervened. He confronted Tachibana about the harm caused by her remarks. Later, speaking passionately through Ayako's dormitory door, Onodera emphasized her inherent talent. He declared her voice evoked imagery of a grand finale performance and convinced her she belonged at Kouka. This intervention prevented her withdrawal. After a period of recovery, Ayako returned visibly healthier. She delivered a solo vocal performance that left her classmates in awe, solidifying her reputation as an exceptional vocalist.

Separate from her central struggles with body image and confidence, Ayako has a secondary backstory involving a past classmate, Asuka Yano. Asuka harbored unrequited romantic feelings for Ayako. Ayako initially misinterpreted Asuka's emotional confession as laughter. She only realized the truth much later, after enrolling at Kouka.

Personal details include her birthday (June 20th), her status as a younger sister, her zodiac sign (Gemini), and her name: Ayako (彩子 - "color" + "child"), Yamada (山田 - "mountain" + "field").
