Description
Genesect is a Mythical Pokémon that serves as the primary antagonist in the film Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened. The character is actually a group of five individuals of the same species, led by a singular red-colored member often referred to as the Red Genesect. Their background is rooted in tragedy and science. These creatures are ancient Pokémon that lived 300 million years ago and were extinct. They were resurrected from fossils by the villainous organization Team Plasma, who then heavily modified them, adding a powerful cannon to their backs and other cybernetic enhancements in an effort to create the most powerful Pokémon ever created.

Disoriented and confused after their revival, the group of Genesect escapes into the modern world and seeks a place they can call home. Their journey brings them to the film’s setting, a large city modeled after New York, where they are drawn to a new nature preserve called Pokémon Hills in Central Park. The tall buildings of the city skyline remind them of the rocky, mountainous terrain that was their habitat millions of years ago.

The personalities among the five Genesect vary, but they are defined by a shared sense of fear and aggression toward an unfamiliar world. The majority of the group, including the three unnamed purple Genesect, are highly aggressive and follow the commands of their leader without question. However, one smaller Genesect, which holds the Douse Drive, is notably different. This individual is more timid, curious, and childlike. It is capable of expressing a simple but profound desire, stating I want to go home, and forms a sympathetic bond with the human protagonist, Ash Ketchum.

The leader, the Red Genesect, is the central figure of the group. It has a stubborn, hasty, and grim personality, viewing every person and Pokémon outside of its own unit with suspicion as an enemy. Its primary motivation is not malice but survival and a protective instinct for its fellows. Its single-minded goal is to find a safe nest for its group, and it perceives the sanctuary of Pokémon Hills as the perfect location, regardless of the other Pokémon already living there. This rigid and uncompromising viewpoint drives its actions throughout the film, causing it to clash violently with anyone who approaches it or its new territory.

The Red Genesect's primary relationship in the film is its adversarial role against another artificially created Pokémon, Mewtwo. Mewtwo sees its own origins reflected in the Genesects and attempts to reason with them and help them, but the Red Genesect rejects all offers of peace and sympathy, initiating a destructive aerial battle across the city. Within its own group, the Red Genesect acts as a commander, and it has the ability to exert a form of mind control over the other four, forcing them to attack even when they might hesitate. This dynamic highlights the leader's dominance and the lack of individual will among the others until later in the story.

Throughout the film, the group's role is to serve as a force of nature, displaced and causing chaos. They build a massive nest that threatens the city's power supply and attack anyone who intervenes. The smaller Douse Drive Genesect begins to show development after its encounters with Ash and his friends. It starts to question the leadership and aggression of the Red Genesect, eventually defying its commands and helping the humans and other Pokémon. The Red Genesect's own development is more dramatic and occurs at the climax of the story. After a final conflict in which it is taken into outer space by Mewtwo, the Red Genesect views the Earth from a distance. Seeing its home planet in its entirety and its beauty for the first time, it has a profound revelation, finally understanding that the world it was fighting for is the same world it was fighting against, and that all living things are its neighbors. This realization ends the conflict and leads to its cooperation.

In terms of notable abilities, Genesect is a highly formidable Pokémon. Its most iconic feature is the large cannon mounted on its back, which is used for its signature attack, Techno Blast. The power of Techno Blast can be altered by equipping different elemental Drives, such as the Shock Drive, Burn Drive, Chill Drive, or Douse Drive, allowing the Genesect to change the attack's type to Electric, Fire, Ice, or Water respectively. The Red Genesect is notably faster and more powerful than the other four, possessing the ability to use the move Extremespeed. Furthermore, Genesect can fold its limbs and connect its head to its back cannon, transforming into a disc-like High-Speed Flight Form that allows it to fly at incredible velocities. It can also produce a sticky silk from its claws, which it uses to build its large, complex nests.
