Description
Catherine is an Amanto, an extraterrestrial being, who initially arrived on Earth for work purposes, regularly sending money back to her family on her home planet. Her background is rooted in crime, as she was a former member of a notorious thief group known as Cat's Punch, where she earned the nickname Latchkey Catherine for her exceptional burglary skills. This past led her to a life of stealing from various establishments in the Kabukicho district, including the very bar where she would later find a home. After being caught and imprisoned, she was given a second chance by the proprietress, Otose, who rehired her at the snack bar upon her release, prompting Catherine to vow never to steal again.
In terms of personality, Catherine presents a rough and often abrasive exterior. She frequently argues with the members of the Yorozuya, often over their unpaid rent, and displays a sharp tongue and short temper, particularly in her rivalrous interactions with Kagura. She also speaks with a distinct, broken accent, though this is later revealed to be a deliberate character creation. Despite this gruff and domineering demeanor, she is deeply insecure and possesses a profound sense of gratitude and loyalty. Her defining trait is her fierce devotion to Otose, whom she respects like a mother. This loyalty was starkly demonstrated when she stood weeping outside Otose's hospital room for two days after an attack, and when she furiously confronted Gintoki for appearing indifferent to Otose's peril.
Catherine's primary motivation throughout the story is to live an honest life and honor the second chance provided by Otose. She is determined to overcome her criminal instincts and remain a faithful employee at Snack Otose. Her role in the story is that of a supporting character and a comic foil, often serving as a tenant and neighbor to the Yorozuya. She shares a notably warm and amicable relationship with Tama, the robotic maid, which contrasts with her typical bickering with others.
Regarding her development, Catherine's central arc involves her struggle to redeem herself and abandon her past as a thief. For the most part, she adheres strictly to her promise not to steal. The one notable exception occurs when Otose's life and life's work are directly threatened, compelling Catherine to temporarily break her vow and utilize her old skills to kidnap a businessman's son in order to protect her benefactor. This act underscores that her reformation is not about the loss of ability, but the redirection of her loyalty. In the epilogue depicted in The Final, Catherine appears significantly aged, sporting a slightly shaved beard and a lower-pitched voice, with her traditionally feminine traits diminished, reflecting the passage of time and her enduring presence in a transformed Edo, still embedded in the community around Snack Otose.
Catherine's most notable abilities are those of a master cat burglar. Her physical body is extremely flexible, allowing her to navigate through complex security systems such as laser grids. She also specializes in bypassing locks and security systems with ease, making her an exceptionally talented infiltrator. While she possesses these impressive skills, she generally refrains from using them, having sworn to leave her criminal life behind.
