Description
Kanon Kanase is a significant character in the anime and light novel series Strike the Blood, first appearing as a student at私立彩海学園 (Saikai Academy) alongside晓凪沙 (Nagisa Akatsuki) and姬柊雪菜 (Yukina Himeragi). Physically, she is a petite young girl with shoulder-length white hair, usually styled with a braid on one side, and clear blue eyes. Her gentle and profoundly kind nature, combined with a serene beauty that suggests a holy quality, has earned her the nickname the middle-school saint among her peers. This kindness extends particularly to stray cats, which she is known to care for tenderly.
Her background holds a secret far removed from her quiet school life. Kanon is of royal blood, revealed to be the illegitimate half-sister of Princess Polifonia Rihavein and thus the aunt of La Folia Rihavein, the princess of the Aldegyr Kingdom. Despite this lineage, she holds no claim to the throne. After her mother passed away, she was adopted by her maternal uncle,叶濑贤生 (Kensei Kanase), a former court sorcerous engineer for the Aldegyr Kingdom. Kensei subjected Kanon to forbidden alchemical experiments, implanting her with "Angel Circuits" in a ritual to transform her into an artificial angel, known as an Angel Faux. He justified these illegal human experiments as an attempt to elevate her to a higher-dimensional existence to survive threats like the Fourth Primogenitor, but his methods were a severe transgression of international treaties.
As a result of these experiments, Kanon gained a range of powerful but unstable abilities as an Angel Faux. In her first form, she manifests white feathered wings that grant her flight and enhanced physical capabilities like speed, strength, and durability. Her second form is far more formidable, allowing her to fire powerful yellow energy beams from the eyes on her multiple wings, blasts strong enough to harm a primogenitor. In this state, she can also generate massive blizzards capable of freezing an entire island. Most critically, this form grants her non-corporeal physiology, effectively making her immune to physical and magical attacks by existing in a separate, higher dimension. A third, berserk form exists, but its full capabilities remain unknown as it was sealed before it could fully manifest.
Kanon's role in the story is central to the arc involving the改造魔偶 (Modified Golem) incident, where she is transformed into a weapon. Her defining motivation becomes her desire for normalcy and connection, as the experiments strip away much of her agency. In her daily life, she forms close friendships with her classmates Yukina Himeragi and Nagisa Akatsuki. She shares a particularly trusting bond with Kojou Akatsuki, the Fourth Primogenitor, whom she affectionately calls Onii-san. Kojou's determination to protect her from the consequences of her transformation is a key factor in her eventual rescue. Her relationship with her adoptive father, Kensei, remains deeply complex; he displays a warped protective instinct even as he uses her as a subject for his grand ambitions.
Ultimately, during the crisis where she evolves into a higher-dimensional being, Kojou forcibly halts her ascension, and Yukina uses her spear, the雪霞狼 (Schneewalzer), to nullify the unstable magical effects. In the aftermath, her powers were sealed, and she came under the care and guardianship of the powerful witch,南宫那月 (Natsuki Minamiya). This allows Kanon to return to her peaceful life as a middle school student, continuing to display her signature kindness by helping care for others, such as bringing food to Kojou during the New Year, while the Aldegyr Kingdom quietly monitors her safety due to her royal connections.
