Description
Hitoe Uemura is a fourteen-year-old middle school student and a central figure in the selector battles. She has brown hair and brown eyes, which she typically frames with a pair of round glasses, and she wears a dark brown hairband. Her hair is often tied up on both sides of her head with green ribbons. Before the events of the series, Hitoe transferred to a middle school in Tokyo after previously living in Aomori, and she struggled significantly with her shy nature, finding it very difficult to make new friends. This profound loneliness is the core of her being when she is introduced.
Initially, Hitoe is a very kind and gentle girl, but she is also extremely timid and lacks confidence in herself. This lack of resolve is a weakness that is exploited in her early selector battles. Her driving motivation is her deep-seated wish to have friends, a wish so powerful that it draws her into the brutal world of the selector battles. She becomes a Selector with the LRIG Midoriko, hoping that winning enough battles will grant her this simple, heartfelt desire.
However, her journey takes a tragic turn. Unaware of the full consequences of losing, Hitoe challenges the powerful selector Iona Urazoe to a battle. This defeat marks her third loss, and the penalty is immediate and horrifying. Her wish to make friends becomes tainted; she loses all her memories of ever being a selector and, more cruelly, of the friendships she had already formed with Ruko Kominato and Yuzuki Kurebayashi. Furthermore, the world around her warps: other people appear to her as terrifying black silhouettes, and any physical contact from someone who cares for her causes her immense pain, making it impossible for her to ever form new bonds. This experience strips her of her gentle nature, and she becomes cold and distant as she is forced to live in a state of isolation. In the wake of this loss, her LRIG Midoriko leaves her card and disappears, filled with regret over the wish she took from Hitoe.
