Description
Mahiru Hiragi is a central figure from the Hiragi family, the powerful clan that controls the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. She is the older half-sister of Shinoa Hiragi and the primary love interest of Guren Ichinose. Her story is deeply tied to the events preceding the catastrophic end of the world, and her actions have lasting consequences on the main narrative. Born in 1996, Mahiru was conceived through artificial insemination using the seed of the family head, Tenri Hiragi, and a woman possessed by a demon, which resulted in Mahiru being born with a demon inside her. From a young age, she demonstrated exceptional intelligence and skill, making her the favored child of her father and the next in line to lead the Hiragi clan. She hated her family for their cruelty, a feeling that was cemented when they had her mother killed when Mahiru was six years old. As an act of defiance, she sought out and became close to Guren Ichinose, a member of a subordinate branch family, and the two fell in love. This relationship was forbidden by the Hiragi clan, and they were forcibly separated for the next ten years.
As a young girl, Mahiru was publicly known for being gentle, sweet, and charming, treating people from other clans with unusual kindness. She was a perfectionist, a trait likely born from the immense pressure placed upon her and her internal struggle with the demon that shared her body. She showed compassion by protecting Sayuri from her cruel half-brother, Seishiro, and was deeply concerned for her younger sister, Shinoa, who also had a demon inside her. In a desperate act to save Shinoa from the same fate, Mahiru extracted the demon from her sister and took it into herself, accelerating her own transformation into a demonic being known as a namanari. As the demon's influence grew, her personality warped. Her need for power to protect Guren twisted into a desire to rule or destroy the world. Her love for him became possessive and cruel; while she would not kill him, she was delighted by his suffering and strength and wished for him to become a demon like her. She grew intensely jealous of any girl who showed affection for Guren, such as Sayuri and Shigure.
Mahiru is a genius and one of the early pioneers of Cursed Gear, the demon-possessed weapons essential for humanity's survival. As a human, she was an exceptional fighter, easily able to defeat her rival half-brother Kureto and intimidate Seishiro. She was also a strategist and prophet, having visions of the future, including the end of the world on Christmas Day 2012. Her actions are largely motivated by two things: her obsessive love for Guren and her desire to protect her sister Shinoa, even if it means sacrificing her own humanity. She manipulated multiple factions, including her own family, the Hyakuya Sect, and vampires like Krul Tepes and Ferid Bathory, to achieve her goals. Ultimately, she was turned into a vampire by Krul Tepes and later willingly fused with the demon Noya. Before the apocalypse, she had a final confrontation with Guren, where she killed all of his friends but left him alive, asking if he hated her. As she died by his side, she told him how to resurrect his friends, revealing her deepest desire was to be a normal girl who could love normally. She was then sealed within Guren's sword, becoming a cursed gear known as Mahiru-no-Yo.
Mahiru's most significant relationships are with Guren Ichinose and Shinoa Hiragi. Her entire existence became defined by her love for Guren, which was both her motivation for gaining power and the source of her corruption. Regarding Shinoa, she was the only family member she genuinely loved and cared for, taking her demon to protect her. Her relationship with her arranged fiancé, Shinya Hiragi, was one of convenience; she told him directly she would never love him, and they agreed to be a cover for each other. In a fit of demonic rage, she later killed him for mocking her love for Guren. Her half-brother Kureto was her rival, and she often mocked him for being weaker, though she also gave him twisted advice on how to become more powerful. In the events of the Battle in Nagoya arc, the demon Mahiru-no-Yo resides in Guren's sword, whispering to him and trying to influence him to follow her will rather than that of the Demon Army. Her nature as a demon is one of violent, possessive love, and she continues to play a crucial role in Guren's plans, even after being separated from Noya. She remains a decisive factor in Guren's success, helping him in battles and scheming against powerful enemies like the first progenitor, Shikama Doji.
