Description
Kogorou Akechi, known simply as Akechi, is a central figure in the anime. He is a seventeen-year-old genius detective whose full name is revealed to be Akechi Kogoro. Akechi holds a unique position as a government-sanctioned minor detective, officially recognized by the Imperial Household Agency, which grants him special permission to be absent from high school in order to dedicate himself to solving difficult or unusual criminal cases. Physically, he is characterized by his short, dark hair, piercing red eyes, and a typical attire consisting of a dark blue jacket over a black shirt with a red tie, paired with jeans and leather shoes. He stands at 180 centimeters tall and weighs 64 kilograms, with a birthday of January 21st.

In terms of personality, Akechi presents a facade of being laidback and somewhat irritable, easily annoyed by trivial matters or the antics of those around him, such as when visitors fail to remove their shoes in his apartment. His demeanor is often described as cool-headed, cold, and occasionally irritable or even lazy, showing little interest in the outside world or in cases that he does not personally find engaging. Akechi has a distinct memory that functions selectively; similar to his acquaintance Kobayashi, he does not remember the faces of people he deems insignificant to his life, often visualizing them as featureless wooden artist's dolls. His primary motivation for becoming a detective stems from a deep-seated, personal mission to pursue and eliminate all individuals who take on the mantle of the criminal known as Twenty Faces. This quest is rooted in his past, as the original Twenty Faces was revealed to be his close friend, Namikoshi, who was presumed dead. This revelation shocked Akechi, but he swore to stop him regardless of their history.

Akechi's role in the story is that of a brilliant consulting detective whose life becomes intertwined with that of a young middle school student named Kobayashi. After Kobayashi is falsely accused of murder, Akechi investigates the case, which leads to Kobayashi appointing himself as Akechi's assistant, a role the detective tolerates with a mixture of annoyance and grudging respect for the boy's deductive skills. Akechi operates from his home, which doubles as his office, a cluttered space filled with stacks of reference materials arranged in a complex order that only he understands. He is known for his constant consumption of canned black coffee and is often seen taking or crushing tablets from a bottle of medication, later identified as a 10 mg sleep aid, which he chases down with his coffee. Among his key relationships, his dynamic with the femme fatale Black Lizard is notable for its irritation, hinting at a past connection, though he still consults her for advice when necessary. He shares good working chemistry with Kobayashi's friend, Hashiba, who can provide valuable resources for their investigations.

Akechi's development is closely tied to his history with Namikoshi. He became a detective specifically to hunt down all copycats of Twenty Faces, making it his life's purpose. The trauma and obsession stemming from this relationship affected his ability to sleep, but after the events surrounding Namikoshi are finally resolved, he is able to find restful sleep. His character also possesses several notable abilities. Foremost is his genius-level power of deduction, enabling him to observe a person and infer detailed facts about them almost instantly. He also has a unique aptitude for picking up new skills and hobbies in an exceptionally short amount of time, a talent that leads him to quickly master and then abandon interests ranging from programming and chess to magic tricks and nunchucks. For self-defense, he has practiced martial arts, including karate learned through correspondence courses. However, his technique relies on dislocating his own joints to maneuver his body at will, a method that leaves his physical strength lacking and his body prone to injury after a confrontation. Despite his dislike for cats, he is noted to be good with babies, able to calm a crying infant with a simple command.
