TV-Series
Description
Kanade Takahashi is the male protagonist of this romantic comedy series. He is a fifth-grade elementary school student, ten years old at the start of the story, yet he possesses a tall, slender physique and handsome facial features that make him look like a high schooler or even older. He has unkempt white hair with pink highlights and indigo eyes. His typical outfit is his school gym uniform, which he wears almost constantly, and he is often seen with a small band-aid on his right knee.

Behind his mature appearance, Kanade’s personality is that of a typical, immature child. He is generally kind, caring, and openhearted, but his behavior is often described as单纯活泼 (childishly energetic), marked by a strong curiosity for lowbrow topics and a tendency to make silly jokes. While he mostly behaves his age, he occasionally displays moments of surprising maturity, largely influenced by the memory of his deceased mother, who serves as his primary role model.

Kanade’s primary motivation throughout the story is navigating his first romantic relationship with Kaho Nikaidou, a high school girl. He is genuinely fond of her and expresses his affection in very direct, albeit often bizarre, ways that reflect his childish mindset. For example, he once proposed a breakup challenge based on his ability to spin a hula hoop two hundred times and has serenaded Kaho with self-composed love songs on a melodica. Although he is inexperienced and can be insensitive due to his age, leading to misunderstandings and temporary breakups, he is committed to taking responsibility for his actions and is determined to make his relationship with Kaho work.

In the story, Kanade serves as the catalyst for the central conflict and comedy. His secret—that he is in elementary school—is the premise upon which his relationship with Kaho is built, and much of the narrative follows how they overcome the challenges posed by their age gap and differing levels of maturity. His closest relationships are with his eccentric fifth-grade classmates, Tomu and Gin, who are also abnormally tall and often join him in his childish antics. He also has a key dynamic with Atsushi Taga, a high school student who becomes a rival for Kaho’s affection, creating a love triangle that complicates Kanade’s relationship.

Kanade’s development is subtle but present. A significant event in his background is the death of his mother two years before the series begins, when he was in the third grade. This loss made him difficult for his father to handle and is the source of many of the mature lessons and theories about love that he frequently recites, as he tries to live by the principles she taught him. While he remains largely immature, he gradually gains a deeper understanding of his feelings for Kaho and what it means to be in a relationship. His arc involves learning to be more considerate of her feelings, showing that despite his childishness, he is capable of growth and taking their bond seriously. His notable abilities include a reckless physicality suited for sports and a sincere, if unconventional, talent for grand romantic gestures that often leave those around him baffled.
