Description
Ikaruga Suginami is a first-year student at the Anti-Magic Academy and a key member of the institution's 35th Test Platoon. She is a young girl of sixteen years with long, waist-length brown hair that has a somewhat unkempt appearance with curling baby hairs, and deep purple eyes. Her figure is notably mature, making her the tallest among the female members of her platoon, and she is most frequently seen wearing a white lab coat over her school uniform.

Her background is deeply unusual, as she was not born under ordinary circumstances but was created as a Designer Child by a corporate organization known as Alchemist. She spent her early childhood entirely within one of Alchemist's laboratories, where she and her twin sister, Isuka Suginami, were raised to be scientific prodigies, excelling in genetics and the creation of experimental weapons. Her perspective changed when she happened upon a children's book, which inspired a curiosity about the outside world and a desire to live a normal life. To escape, she deliberately created a failed experimental subject, an elf child she named Kanaria, knowing that the mistake would lead to her expulsion from the facility. While she intended to bring Kanaria with her, the child had already disappeared, and Ikaruga was forced to escape alone, leaving her sister behind against her wishes.

Following her escape, Ikaruga enrolled in the Anti-Magic Academy. Before entering high school, she was scouted to join the special division Regin but refused, insisting she wanted to experience a normal, youthful school life. Upon entering, she was assigned to the 35th Test Platoon. In terms of personality, she presents a facade of a lazy and laid-back individual, often speaking in a relaxed, knowledgeable tone with little concern for formalities. A major facet of her character is her perverse and teasing nature; she frequently makes sexual jokes and innuendos, and she openly gropes her female teammates, most notably the sniper Usagi Saionji, towards whom she admits to having feelings of love. Despite this seemingly frivolous exterior, she possesses strong maternal instincts and is deeply observant, constantly monitoring the well-being and emotional states of her platoon members.

Her primary motivation is to protect the normal, youthful life she has found for herself and her friends, and to atone for her past. This includes a deep-seated desire to free her sister Isuka from the clutches of Alchemist. As the story progresses, she is forced to confront her past when her former life catches up with her, leading her to temporarily leave the platoon to return to the Alchemist laboratory. During this arc, her motivations become clear: she intends to destroy the facility, prevent the resurrection of the dark elves, and finally bring her sister back with her.

Regarding key relationships, Ikaruga shares her most significant bond with Takeru Kusanagi, the captain of the 35th Platoon. They have been friends since middle school, and she is the person who knows him best, having helped him become more socially adjusted after a crushing defeat. She harbors clear romantic feelings for him, though she rarely expresses them directly, preferring to tease him; she once declared she would be perfectly fine with being his mistress. Her relationship with her sister Isuka is tragic and complex, defined by childhood closeness, Ikaruga's guilt over abandoning her, and her ultimate failure to save her. Her reunion with Kanaria, the elf child she created, is fraught with difficulty, as the girl has trouble accepting Ikaruga, leading the former scientist to question whether she has the right to feel a mother's love for her.

Ikaruga undergoes significant development through these relationships and conflicts. Initially seemingly unflappable, she is shown to be deeply scarred by her past decisions, particularly the burden of creating a life she believed was killed. Her decision to return to the Alchemist lab and her subsequent failure to save Isuka, who dies in her arms, causes her to become emotional and cry for the first time, signifying a final break from her emotionally detached upbringing. Furthermore, she actively seeks to distance herself from her origins, going so far as to physically alter her own DNA to break a psychic connection with her genealogical mother, Suzaku Suginami.

In terms of abilities, Ikaruga is a genius-level expert in technology. Her role in the 35th Test Platoon is that of a technician, hacker, and information specialist, responsible for maintaining and illegally modifying the team's weapons, hacking into other platoons' data, and providing tactical support and surveillance with drones. Her abilities are not solely technological; due to her origins as an Alchemist Design Child, she has had dark elf cells implanted within her body. This allows her to transform into a dark elf when necessary, granting her the ability to use magic in combat and manifest other unique powers. This combination of laid-back humor, deep-seated trauma, technical genius, and secret combat capability makes her a quintessential member of the small fry platoon.
