Description
Kyūta, originally named Ren, is the central protagonist of the film. His background begins with tragedy: at nine years old, his mother dies in an accident and his father is absent, leaving him with no immediate family. Refusing to live with relatives, he runs away and wanders the streets of Shibuya. There he encounters Kumatetsu, a powerful but crude beast from the parallel world of Jutengai. Drawn by a desire for strength and a place to belong, Ren follows Kumatetsu into the beast world and becomes his apprentice. Because he only gives his age, Kumatetsu names him Kyūta, after the number nine.
Kyūta's personality evolves significantly over the story. Initially he is angry, defiant, and closed off, struggling with feelings of abandonment and loneliness. He clashes frequently with Kumatetsu, as both are stubborn and rough around the edges. However, beneath this exterior is a deep yearning for connection and a fierce determination to grow stronger. As he trains and lives among the beasts, he gradually learns to open up, developing a stubborn pride in his own abilities and a grudging respect for his master. By adolescence, he becomes more self-aware, thoughtful, and capable of forming genuine bonds, though he still wrestles with questions of identity and belonging.
His primary motivation shifts from raw survival and the need for strength to a more complex search for purpose and a place where he truly fits. He wants to prove himself worthy—first to Kumatetsu, then to the beast community, and later to himself. When he discovers a way back to the human world and meets the kind student Kaede, he is torn between his two lives. This conflict drives much of his internal struggle: he longs to reconcile his human past with the family and identity he has built in Jutengai.
Kyūta's role in the story is that of a bridge between two worlds. His presence in the beast kingdom forces Kumatetsu to grow as a teacher and a leader, while his re-entry into the human world reconnects him with his roots. He ultimately becomes the key to resolving the crisis when Ichirōhiko, another human raised among beasts, succumbs to inner darkness and threatens both realms. Kyūta's journey is one of self-discovery and reconciliation.
His key relationships are deeply formative. With Kumatetsu, he experiences a rough but genuine father-son dynamic. Their training sessions are marked by conflict, but through imitation and persistence, Kyūta learns to predict Kumatetsu's movements and eventually matches his strength. Kaede serves as his guide back to human society, teaching him reading and writing and offering emotional support. She gives him a bracelet that helps him anchor himself when his inner darkness threatens to consume him. With the beast friends Tatara and Hyakushubo, he finds acceptance, and with the young beast Jirōmaru, he forms a lasting friendship. His relationship with Ichirōhiko functions as a dark mirror, as both are humans raised by beasts, but Ichirōhiko's inability to accept his identity leads him down a destructive path.
Kyūta's development is marked by several turning points. His early training forces him to overcome frustration and learn through observation and mimicry, eventually making him a skilled kendo fighter. When he returns to the human world, he struggles with his dual identity and nearly falls into the same void that consumes Ichirōhiko, but Kaede's support and his own willpower pull him back. During the final conflict, he reaches a point where he is willing to sacrifice himself to stop Ichirōhiko, absorbing his dark energy and intending to die. However, Kumatetsu, now the new lord of the beasts, sacrifices his physical form to become a sword that merges with Kyūta, filling the emptiness inside him. This fusion allows Kyūta to defeat Ichirōhiko without killing him, and he ultimately chooses to live in the human world with Kumatetsu's spirit residing within him.
Notable abilities include his talent for learning by copying the movements of others, which he first develops by imitating Kumatetsu during chores. This makes him a highly adaptable combatant. He becomes accomplished in kendo and swordsmanship, able to hold his own against powerful beasts. After Kumatetsu merges with him, he gains the ability to wield a flaming sword and channel the beast's strength, enabling him to neutralize Ichirōhiko's destructive power. He also possesses a profound emotional void within himself, which initially threatens to overwhelm him but later becomes a tool to absorb negative energy, though this carries great risk.
