Description
Chizuru Hishiro is the female protagonist of this story and holds the designation of Subject 001 for the ReLIFE experiment at the Kanto branch, having begun her participation one year before her male counterpart. Her outward appearance is that of a seventeen-year-old high school student, but her actual age is twenty-eight, later turning twenty-nine. She has long, straight black hair that she typically wears in two ponytails, often secured with green hair ties, and possesses light green eyes. Standing at a height of 162 centimeters, her birthday is on December 25th.

The roots of Chizuru's adult struggles lie in her childhood. Due to frequently transferring schools as a child, she never learned the meaning of forming relationships with others, as any friendship was short-lived. This led to a severe deficiency in communication skills. Despite this, she held a vague belief that good grades would lead to a good job, so she focused solely on her studies. She graduated from a prestigious university with excellent marks and was hired by a major corporation. While her job performance was highly capable and efficient, her inability to communicate and cooperate with colleagues led to conflicts. She was forced to resign from multiple positions for the same reason and eventually found herself unable to secure new employment, becoming a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). She was recruited for the ReLIFE experiment by Ryo Yoake, who became her first supervisor.

As a person, Chizuru is defined by her high intelligence and her paradoxical lack of social grace. She is consistently the top student in her grade, demonstrating a powerful academic ability. However, she is extremely clumsy in interpersonal situations, a natural airhead who struggles to read the atmosphere or understand the feelings of those around her. She typically maintains a blank expression and speaks in a flat, monotone voice. She has a habit of speaking her mind directly and honestly, regardless of whether it is polite or hurtful, which can come across as unintentionally blunt or even a little toxic. Her most infamous trait is her inability to perform a natural, friendly smile; her forced attempts at smiling are described as frightening and capable of making enemies rather than friends. Because her own emotional experiences are so limited, she lacks experience with romance and does not initially understand the nature of romantic feelings. When faced with any situation she does not comprehend, from academic problems to personal emotions or even how to repair a friendship, her immediate instinct is to search for a solution on the internet and follow the advice she finds there without question.

Chizuru’s primary motivation throughout the story is a deep-seated, clumsy desire to change herself. She is acutely aware that her inability to connect with others is a problem, but she lacks the fundamental tools and knowledge to address it. Joining the ReLIFE experiment represents a second chance for her to learn the social skills she missed out on in her youth. Her role in the narrative is twofold. Initially, she is the primary subject whose development the ReLIFE experiment seeks to measure. More prominently, she becomes the key figure whom the main male protagonist helps and connects with, and their relationship serves as the emotional core of the story. By assisting her in making friends and navigating high school social life, he finds a purpose in his own second chance.

Her most significant and transformative relationship is with the male protagonist, who becomes her first real friend. He lends her money for lunch on their first day, and she openly admits her loneliness to him, actively asking for his phone number to change her situation. Under his guidance, she learns the basics of social interaction. This relationship eventually blossoms into romantic love on her part, a new and confusing emotion for her. Her relationship with fellow classmate Rena Kariu is initially fraught with misunderstandings. Chizuru’s attempts to befriend Rena, including her forced smile and habit of calling people by their physical traits (like "the red-haired girl who scored 7.38 seconds"), are misinterpreted as mockery and arrogance. With the male protagonist often acting as a mediator, their rivalry transforms into a genuine, strong friendship, and Rena gives her the nickname "Hishiron." Through Rena, she also becomes close friends with Honoka Tamarai. Her relationship with her supervisors also evolves. While Ryo Yoake observes her during her struggling first year, she finds his successor, An Onoya, somewhat irritating due to their clashing personalities. Nevertheless, she comes to trust Onoya enough to seek her advice on cooking and fashion for her dates.

Chizuru’s character development is the central arc of her story. Her first year as a subject was deemed a failure by the laboratory because she made no effort to change and remained isolated. However, she was granted a second year. From the beginning of that year, with the male protagonist's help, she slowly opens her heart. She moves from being completely alone to sharing lunches with her new friends, and from being utterly self-absorbed to actively helping others resolve their own issues concerning friendship and family. She learns to care for the people around her and eventually recognizes and accepts her own romantic feelings. Her key ability, aside from her exceptional academic prowess, is her analytical mind and a strong capacity for hard work and persistence. Once she decides on a goal, she applies herself to it thoroughly and methodically, even if the method is strangely literal, like searching the internet for the correct procedure to smile, apologize, or fold money in a creative way.
