Description
Momoshiki Otsutsuki is a member of the main family of the Otsutsuki clan, an ancient and powerful extraterrestrial race that travels across planets to harvest chakra by planting Divine Trees and consuming the resulting Chakra Fruits. He was sent to investigate the whereabouts of Kaguya Otsutsuki, a member of the clan who had taken control of Earth, and to determine whether she had betrayed the clan or been defeated by the planet's inhabitants. Upon discovering that Kaguya had failed and that her chakra had spread across humanity in the form of tailed beasts, Momoshiki resolved to gather that chakra and cultivate a new Divine Tree to harvest a new Chakra Fruit for himself.
In terms of personality, Momoshiki possesses a profound sense of superiority and views humans as inferior life forms. He carries himself with an air of arrogance and entitlement, often speaking dismissively or mockingly to his opponents. He is calm and condescending in most situations but can become enraged when his expectations are frustrated or when he is humiliated. He is also shown to be a capable schemer, able to adapt his tactics to changing circumstances, and he possesses a certain inventive quality, creating variations of techniques he has absorbed. Despite his lazy and self-indulgent nature, he remains ruthless and pragmatic, willing to sacrifice even his own partner to gain an advantage.
Momoshiki's primary motivation is the pursuit of godlike power and immortality. He seeks to absorb the chakra of the tailed beasts, especially the Nine-Tails sealed within Naruto Uzumaki, to create a powerful Chakra Fruit that will grant him youth, longevity, and supernatural abilities. He sees this as his birthright as a member of the Otsutsuki clan, and he views the harvesting of planets as the natural order of things. His ultimate goal is to become a being like the legendary Shibai Otsutsuki, transcending the limits of mortal existence.
His role in the story begins as the primary antagonist of Boruto: Naruto the Movie. He and his partner, Kinshiki Otsutsuki, arrive on Earth during the Chunin Exams, where they abduct Naruto and begin extracting the chakra of the Nine-Tails. A team consisting of Boruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and the five Kage pursues them to another dimension, where a fierce battle ensues. Overwhelmed by the combined efforts of his enemies, Momoshiki consumes Kinshiki to transform into a more powerful form, gaining a third Rinnegan on his forehead and enhanced physical abilities. Despite this, he is ultimately defeated by a combined Rasengan from Naruto and Boruto. In his final moments, before his spirit fades, Momoshiki freezes time and speaks privately with Boruto. Recognizing the boy's potential, he implants a Karma seal on Boruto's palm, ensuring that his own consciousness will survive and eventually resurrect by overwriting Boruto's body. This act transforms Momoshiki from a one-time film villain into an ongoing threat that persists throughout the Boruto series, as he periodically manifests through the Karma to take control of Boruto's body and consciousness.
Key relationships include his partnership with Kinshiki, whom he ultimately sacrifices for power, and his adversarial relationships with Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, who work together to oppose him. His most significant relationship is with Boruto Uzumaki, who becomes his unwilling vessel. Momoshiki views Boruto as a receptacle for his resurrection, and his presence within Boruto creates an ongoing internal conflict for the young ninja. He also interacts with other Otsutsuki members such as Urashiki Otsutsuki, though their relationship is marked by mutual disrespect and contempt.
In terms of development, Momoshiki begins as a seemingly straightforward alien invader but evolves into a more complex and persistent antagonist after his death. His implantation of the Karma seal establishes him as a parasitic consciousness that can seize control of Boruto's body, fight on his own, and even absorb chakra from others to sustain himself. This dynamic deepens as Boruto struggles to maintain his identity and avoid becoming a tool for Momoshiki's revival. At one point, Momoshiki brings Boruto back from a near-fatal state, not out of mercy but out of self-interest, as Boruto's death would end his own chance at resurrection. His presence forces Boruto to grapple with the weight of his own power and the danger he poses to those he loves.
Momoshiki possesses formidable abilities. He has a pair of Byakugan, granting him near-360-degree vision and the ability to see chakra pathways. He also wields a unique red-colored Rinnegan in each of his palms, which allow him to absorb any ninjutsu directed at him and release it back with amplified force. After consuming Kinshiki, his Rinnegan transforms into a golden color and a third Rinnegan appears on his forehead, further enhancing his power. He can create massive energy constructs, such as a golem, and use space-time ninjutsu to travel between dimensions. He is also capable of flight and has immense physical strength and durability, allowing him to fight multiple Kage-level opponents simultaneously. Through the Karma seal, he can manifest within Boruto's body, taking control of his actions and accessing his own abilities even after death. He can absorb chakra from others to replenish himself and generate powerful techniques, such as a massive Rasengan formed from the chakra of the Nine-Tails. His abilities make him a formidable and versatile opponent, though he has a notable weakness against pure natural energy, which his Rinnegan cannot absorb.
