TV-Series
Description
Akane Kimidori is a central supporting character in her series, known primarily as the best friend of the main protagonist, Arale Norimaki. A human resident of Penguin Village, she is a 13-year-old girl who lives at the Coffee Pot, a café run by her older sister, Aoi Kimidori. Her personality stands in stark contrast to her sister’s responsible nature, as Akane is a rebellious tomboy who actively seeks to break rules for her own amusement. She takes particular delight in pulling pranks on many of the villagers, with Senbei Norimaki, Arale’s creator, being a favorite target.
Despite frequently receiving poor grades in school, Akane is quite sensible, smart, and cunning. When she and her friends devise plans, she often acts as the strategist, coming up with good ideas that can successfully fool most of the people in their village, which sometimes leads her to feel that those around her are too dimwitted. She also has a quick temper and becomes aggressive when angered. In the earliest chapters of the story, she displayed a strong taste for alcoholic beverages, even carrying liquor in her canteen to drink at school, a habit that led to her being punished and even caused her to miss an adventure involving time travel due to a hangover; however, this characteristic diminished as the story progressed.
Akane first appeared when she was assigned to be desk partners with Arale in Midori Yamabuki’s seventh-grade class. Initially annoyed by Arale’s persistent following, her opinion changed dramatically after she witnessed Arale’s immense strength, and she quickly became the android’s close friend. Her role in the story is largely that of a trouble-making "bad girl" friend who involves herself in the chaotic life of Penguin Village. On one notable occasion, she decided that she and Arale should trade places for a day and dress up as each other, an experiment that led to confusion for Akane as she was unaware of Arale’s robotic nature and could not understand Senbei’s odd behavior toward her.
Akane’s key relationships include her cousins, Taro and Peasuke Soramame, with whom she often associates. Her relationship with a classmate named Tsukutsun Tsun evolves over time from a rivalry into a romance, and she later becomes his girlfriend and eventually his wife. In terms of development, a Future Camera shows her at the age of 23 and later at 73, indicating a long life. Her path also briefly crosses into a related series, where she interacts with the protagonist Goku; on one such occasion, she attempts to ride the Kinto'un, a cloud that can only be ridden by the pure of heart, and is rejected due to her impure heart. Her design varies across adaptations; in the original manga and first anime, she has blonde hair and blue eyes, while the 1997 remake gives her brown hair and yellow eyes. One of her notable abilities, which she lists as her talent on her résumé, is a wrestling move known as the Cobra Twist.
