Description
Airi Masaki is a native of the planet Airai, whose people follow a religion centered on the Chousin, the three goddesses who created the universe. She first met her future husband, Yosho Masaki Jurai, while both were students at the Galaxy Academy; she was fifteen years old and he was twelve. Serving as his tour guide, the two fell in love despite the age difference. Before their relationship developed, Airi had been part of a political scheme by Airai’s leaders to marry into Jurai’s royal houses and gain control of the goddess Tsunami. However, her plans changed when she became pregnant with Yosho’s child. Around the same time, the serial killer known as Widow triggered mass suicides and civil war on Airai, killing her father and most of the ruling class. Airi and her newborn daughter, Minaho, survived and were granted asylum under the protection of the Masaki name. She later gave birth to a second daughter, Kiyone, who would become the mother of the series’ protagonist, Tenchi Masaki. This makes Airi Tenchi’s maternal grandmother, a fact she strongly dislikes being reminded of; even Tenchi addresses her formally as Airi-san to avoid her displeasure. Airi holds significant positions within the Galaxy Police, serving as the head of the Jurai sector office and as chairwoman of the Galaxy Police Academy, where she works closely with headmistress Mikami Kuramitsu. Her personality blends sophistication with a deeply mischievous and uninhibited side; she loves playing practical jokes and co-wrote an elaborate false explanation for Kiyone’s death as a prank. She is a master of the Neo-Academy fighting style, which consists primarily of slapping and using a cold, intimidating stare – a technique she successfully used on Ryoko after being insulted. Airi has a passion for cooking, a hobby she developed on the advice of Lady Seto, and can often be found practicing in the academy’s restaurants. She has a tendency to tease and sexually harass young men like Seina Yamada, a trait linked to her first meeting with Yosho when he was young. Despite her playful and sometimes perverse behavior, she is fiercely protective and values Seina highly for his role in capturing Widow. Her marriage to Yosho remains a secret because his survival has not been made public, though they are still in love. Her relationship with her older daughter Minaho is unconventional; due to their long lifespans, they are described as being more like sisters, though Airi once performed experimental procedures on a young Minaho that left her physically scarred. They have since reconciled. Airi has a quick temper and does not tolerate fools, but she remains a competent, sly, and powerful figure whose life has been marked by tragedy, political intrigue, and eventual influence across the galaxy.
