Description
Karla, known as the Grey Witch, is a pivotal figure in the history of the accursed island of Lodoss. Her origins lie in the ancient Magic Kingdom of Kastuul, where she was born into the ruling family as a powerful sorceress named Arnakarla. When Kastuul fell to barbarian invasion, Karla foresaw the event as the inevitable consequence of her kingdom becoming too powerful. To survive, she sealed her soul and immense magical power into a golden circlet, allowing her to take possession of whoever wears it. Her original physical body perished in the fall of Kastuul, and she has since lived for over five centuries by passing from one host to another, discarding bodies when they grow too old or no longer serve her purpose.

Karla is driven by a singular, unwavering philosophy born from the destruction of her homeland. She believes that the only way to prevent Lodoss from suffering a similar catastrophe is to maintain a perfect equilibrium between the forces of good and evil, peace and chaos, light and darkness. Whenever a single power threatens to become too dominant and unite the island under its control, Karla intervenes to destabilize it. This has led her to provoke wars during times of peace and to forge fragile peaces when conflict threatens to consume everything. Because she serves neither the side of light nor darkness, but rather the abstract concept of balance itself, she is called neither a white witch nor a black witch, but the Grey Witch. Over the centuries, her long life and the act of manipulating the fates of nations have led her to see herself almost as a god, though her actions often cause as much suffering as they prevent.

In the era chronicled in the narrative, Karla continues to pursue her grand design. She was once one of the legendary Six Heroes who defeated the Demon King, fighting in secrecy while her identity was known only to the sage Wort. Decades later, she instigated the War of Heroes by pitting King Fahn of Valis against Emperor Beld of Marmo, as both leaders had grown too powerful. During this conflict, she possessed the body of a young priestess named Leylia, whom she had kidnapped seven years prior. Karla protected Leylia's body because the priestess was the reincarnation of Naneel, the high priestess of the dark goddess Kardis, making her a potential doorway for the goddess's resurrection; by inhabiting her, Karla could prevent others from exploiting this power while also using Leylia's form for her own schemes. The Grey Witch considered the dark goddess's resurrection as great a threat to the island's balance as total conquest by a single nation.

Karla's key relationships are defined by her role as a manipulator. She was an enigmatic ally to the heroes of the past, including King Fahn, Emperor Beld, and the priestess Neese, but later became a direct antagonist to a new generation. The dwarf Ghim, who was deeply devoted to Leylia, became her determined foe and ultimately sacrificed himself to knock the circlet from Leylia's head, freeing her. After Leylia's rescue, Karla's spirit was briefly transferred to the rogue Woodchuck before she found another host. The knight Parn became one of her primary adversaries, eventually confronting her again years later during Wagnard's attempted resurrection of Kardis. In a complex turn, after her circlet was removed from its host, the freed Leylia chose to keep the artifact. She reasoned that if she remained conscious of Karla's presence while wearing it, she could avoid possession and instead learn from the ancient witch's vast knowledge and memories.

Karla possesses formidable abilities derived from her lifetime as a sorceress of Kastuul, enhanced by centuries of experience. Her most defining power is the enchanted circlet that preserves her soul, granting her a form of immortality through body possession. She is a master of powerful magic, capable of launching devastating attacks and creating complex enchantments, as demonstrated when she single-handedly attacked Princess Fianna's carriage. Her long life has granted her immense knowledge of Lodoss's history, magic, and secrets. She is also a master strategist and manipulator, able to orchestrate continent-spanning wars from the shadows to achieve her goal of maintaining balance. Throughout the narrative, Karla remains a neutral force of nature, neither wholly villainous nor heroic, but a grey witch forever dedicated to preserving Lodoss through a perpetual, cyclical balance of power.
