Description
Aldonova, also known as Aldo Nova, is a character from the anime Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. He is a tall and powerfully built young man who comes from a noble family of the Wind Tribe. His early life was marked by a traumatic incident when, as a boy, his immense strength caused the accidental death of an older boy during a wrestling match. This event haunted him, instilling a deep fear of his own size and power. In response to his son's lack of confidence, Aldonova's disappointed father sent him away to study magic under the tutelage of Slayn, a famed wizard from the original Six Heroes. Fortunately, Aldonova demonstrated a natural aptitude for sorcery.
By the age of thirty-one, Aldonova had become a capable mage. When the story begins, he is living in the kingdom of Flaim, where his master Slayn serves as the court sage to King Kashue. When a powerful artifact known as the Soul Crystal Ball is stolen, prompting the young knight Spark to lead an expedition to recover it, Slayn requests that Aldonova accompany the group. This mission becomes the central focus of his involvement.
Personality wise, Aldonova is defined by a conflict between his formidable physical presence and his cautious, fearful nature. His past trauma makes him deeply hesitant to use his strength, and he initially doubts his ability to protect himself or others. This internal struggle shakes his resolve during the party's first major conflict. However, the priest Greevus casts a spell of courage on him, which provides the confidence Aldonova needs to face his duties. Significantly, this newfound bravery persists long after the spell's magical effects have faded, marking a genuine turning point in his character.
Aldonova's primary motivation is a sense of responsibility and protection, specifically towards Little Neese, Slayn’s thirteen-year-old daughter. He recognizes her immediately when the party encounters her and is keenly aware of the grave danger she represents, as she is destined to become the Doorway for the resurrection of the dark goddess Kardis. Slayn sent Aldonova on the mission specifically because he knew Aldonova would do anything to protect the girl. Aldonova repeatedly tries to convince Neese to return home for her safety, but she refuses, determined to face her fate. This protective drive is a key element of his role in the story, which culminates in a valiant fight to rescue her after she is kidnapped by the dark sorcerer Wagnard. He also serves as a source of exposition, revealing crucial information about Neese’s lineage and Wagnard’s weaknesses to his companions.
His key relationships are central to his development. His bond with his master Slayn is one of trust and responsibility. His relationship with Spark is that of a companion and advisor. The most significant dynamic is with Little Neese, whom he sees as a charge to be shielded at all costs. The support of Greevus is also pivotal, as his spell provides the catalyst for Aldonova to overcome his crippling self-doubt.
Throughout the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, Aldonova undergoes a clear development from a man paralyzed by his past into a courageous and reliable hero. His journey is not about gaining new power, but about learning to master the strength he already possesses and feared. By the story's conclusion, after returning home as one of six honored heroes, Aldonova’s growth is complete. When Spark is named the Duke of Marmo, Aldonova accepts the position of his court mage, having fully embraced his abilities and his role as a protector.
As a wizard, his notable abilities include the casting of offensive and defensive magic, as seen when he battles dark elves. While he is a skilled magic user, his most notable physical trait is his immense, natural-born strength, which he eventually learns to control and wield with confidence.
