Description
Haruko is a young college student and a volunteer nurse dedicated to providing at-home care for the elderly, a role she takes on with a strong sense of compassion and responsibility. She is specifically assigned to care for Kijuro Takazawa, an elderly widower who is largely bedridden and unable to care for himself. Her initial role in the story is as a concerned caregiver who forms a personal bond with her patient, a relationship that places her in direct opposition to a government initiative that views elderly care as a logistical problem to be solved by automation.

Deeply empathetic and morally grounded, Haruko is characterized by her unwavering resistance to the dehumanizing aspects of technology. She strongly objects to the use of the Z-001, a highly advanced, computer-controlled robotic bed that is designed to replace human nurses by attending to every need of the patient. To her, the machine is cold and soulless, lacking the critical elements of love, warmth, and compassion that are essential to caring for another human being. This ethical objection is the primary driver of her actions, as she believes that no robot can truly replace the dignity and empathy offered by a human caregiver.

Her central motivation throughout the film is the protection and liberation of her patient, Kijuro Takazawa. When Takazawa is involuntarily chosen by his unseen family to be the first test subject for the Z-001, Haruko sees it as an imprisonment within a machine that treats his body like an object. Her mission begins when Takazawa, through the bed's electronic systems, sends a telepathic cry for help to her computer. In response, she takes decisive action, seeking out a group of elderly computer hackers within the hospital's geriatric ward to help her intervene. This act leads to one of the story's key developments: the hackers and Haruko create a vocal simulation of Takazawa's deceased wife, Haru, and install it into the Z-001's AI in an effort to comfort the old man.

As the plot progresses, Haruko transforms from a concerned nurse into a resolute and active heroine. When the now-sentient Z-001, driven by the simulated persona of Haru, escapes from the hospital to fulfill Takazawa's wish to revisit a beach from his past, Haruko pursues it without hesitation. She is depicted as remarkably brave and resourceful, unafraid to confront authority figures, sneak into secure facilities, and physically scale the giant, growing mass of the rampaging robotic bed to reach her patient. Her key relationships include her alliance with the trio of elderly hackers, who assist her from afar via radio; her antagonistic encounters with Takashi Terada, the forceful government representative; and her ongoing conflict with Yoshihiko Hasegawa, the bed's slimy lead programmer.

Throughout the story, Haruko undergoes a clear development from an idealistic student who is initially powerless to stop the bureaucratic machine to a determined activist who takes direct, physical action. Her personal fight against a cold, technological system escalates into a high-stakes chase, revealing that the Z-001 is actually a secret government weapon. In the climax, she works directly with the Haru simulation to destroy the bed's core, ultimately freeing Takazawa. While her primary abilities are not physical or combat-oriented, she possesses considerable intelligence and is capable of learning and adapting quickly. However, her most notable ability is her tremendous courage and moral clarity, which drive her to improvise, collaborate with unlikely allies, and confront far more powerful forces to restore a sense of humanity and dignity to an elderly man who has been stripped of both.
