Movie
Description
Mamoru Torigai appears in the film as a supporting character who initially seems to be an ordinary friend and classmate of the protagonist Ayato Kamina inside Tokyo Jupiter. He is romantically involved with Hiroko Asahina, another classmate, though Asahina secretly cares for Ayato rather than for Mamoru. This unreciprocated affection forms the basis of a deep-seated resentment that Mamoru harbors toward Ayato, even while he maintains a friendly outward demeanor.
In reality, Mamoru is a true Mulian, placing him among the highest ranks of the alternate-dimensional Mu society alongside figures such as Ernst von Bähbem, Maya Kamina, and Quon Kisaragi. His apparent friendship with Ayato is a cover for his role as an observer and agent of the Mu, assigned to keep watch over Ayato from within the sealed city.
After Ayato escapes Tokyo Jupiter with Hiroko Asahina, Mamoru later follows him to the outside world of Nirai Kanai and lives with him for a short period. While there, he learns that Asahina has died. Overcome with grief and blaming Ayato for her death, Mamoru sheds his disguise and confronts Ayato directly. He pilots his own Dolem, named Obbligato, and attacks the RahXephon. His Dolem is outmatched, and he loses an arm in the battle. He later returns with a fully repaired Dolem for a second confrontation, this time after Ayato has fully merged with the RahXephon, and perishes in the fight.
At the conclusion of the film, after Ayato re-tunes the world, Mamoru is brought back to life alongside Asahina. His given name, Mamoru, means to protect in Japanese, an ironic counterpoint to his inability to protect Asahina and his eventual turn against his former friend.
His key relationships are with Ayato, whom he resents and later attacks as an enemy; with Hiroko Asahina, his romantic interest whose feelings for Ayato fuel his jealousy; and with the Mu leadership, to whom he remains loyal. His notable ability is his status as a true Mulian, which grants him a high position within Mu society and the capacity to pilot a Dolem, a large musical and mystical weapon used by the Mu forces. His development moves from a seemingly ordinary classmate masking hidden loyalties to an antagonist driven by personal loss and bitterness, culminating in his death and subsequent restoration in the world's re-tuning.
