Description
Ayato Kamina is the seventeen-year-old protagonist of RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio. He is a young man of mixed heritage, possessing both Human and Mu lineage, which places him at the center of a conflict that will determine the fate of the world. His primary role is that of an instrumentalist, a person uniquely capable of synchronizing with and piloting a giant, godlike being known as the RahXephon, a power that has been prepared for him since birth.

Before the events of the film, Ayato lived a peaceful life as a middle school student in Tokyo, where he was in a young and somewhat awkward relationship with his classmate, Reika Mishima. This ordinary existence is shattered when the Mu arrive, enveloping Tokyo within an impenetrable barrier known as the Absolute Barrier, which comes to be called Tokyo Jupiter. Inside this barrier, time flows much slower than in the outside world. Years later, now a high school student, Ayato believes the world outside Tokyo has been destroyed, but his memories of Reika continue to linger like a distant vision.

His life is upended again when the barrier is attacked, and a woman named Haruka Shitow appears to lead him out of Tokyo and into the outside world. Ayato is drawn to the RahXephon and, during his escape, instinctively pilots it to destroy a Mu super-weapon called a Dolem, thus beginning his journey as its pilot. He soon learns that Haruka is, in truth, his former girlfriend Haruka Mishima, who has now aged twelve years beyond him due to the time dilation of Tokyo Jupiter, making her a twenty-nine-year-old woman. Ayato is also confronted with the fact that his mother, Maya Kamina, is the leader of the Mu, and that the creation of the barrier was orchestrated specifically for his awakening as the tuner of time who holds the world's fate.

Personality-wise, Ayato is initially portrayed as an artistic and somewhat ordinary youth whose greatest interest is in painting. He has a sensitive nature, which often leads him to experience deep inner conflicts, insecurity, and depression, particularly after he discovers he is half-Mulian. He struggles with his identity, feeling confused about whether he belongs with Humanity or the Mu, and questions what he should be fighting for and protecting. Ayato is notably reluctant to fight, often sulking and insisting he does not want to pilot the RahXephon, an attitude that underscores his immaturity at the story's outset. He values truth and trust above many things, and when he feels lied to or manipulated, he tends to react with open hostility, distrust, and sometimes over-the-top emotional outbursts. Despite this, he has a gentle and caring nature, and when people treat him with honesty and respect, he becomes warm and receptive in return. He is also, for a teenage boy, quite naïve about the wider world, a consequence of growing up in the isolated bubble of Tokyo Jupiter, which is culturally and temporally twelve years behind.

Ayato's primary motivation throughout the film is to uncover the truth about his own origins, his past, and the world around him. He is driven by the memory of the girl he lost and is in constant pursuit of that vision. While he initially resists his role, he eventually comes to accept his responsibility, not out of a grand sense of destiny, but to protect his friends and loved ones, regardless of whether they are Human or Mu. A key part of his journey is rekindling his love for Haruka. Despite his initial claim that he does not like older women, he falls in love with her again, and their romance becomes a central theme on which the fate of the world depends.

In terms of his role in the story, Ayato is the one destined to retune the world. To do this, he must fully awaken and become one with the RahXephon, a process that carries the potential for world destruction. He is opposed by the Mu, led by his own mother Maya, who desires his awakening for their own purposes. A tragic aspect of his role as pilot is his ignorance of the connection between the Mu and their Dolems. By destroying a Dolem, he also kills the Mulian who was controlling it, which leads to the heartbreaking revelation that he has killed his own friends from Tokyo Jupiter, Asahina and Mamoru, while trying to protect them.

Ayato's key relationships define his journey. His most important relationship is with Haruka Shitow, the girl he loved and lost, whose memories were erased from his mind by his mother. He also has a strained and distant relationship with his adoptive mother, Maya Kamina, who views him more as a tool for her plans than a son. His relationship with Quon Kisaragi, a mysterious girl who sleeps in a chamber of eternity and is the other instrumentalist, is also significant, as she is, in a sense, his maternal figure and he must ultimately merge with her to tune the world. Other important connections include his friends from Tokyo Jupiter, Asahina and Mamoru, whose fates bring him great sorrow, and Megumi Shitow, Haruka's younger sister, who develops a one-sided crush on him.

Throughout the film, Ayato develops from a reluctant, confused, and insecure teenager into a more resolute individual who accepts his identity and his power. He is a determined individual who refuses to surrender, no matter how much he suffers or how many times he is attacked. As an instrumentalist, his notable ability is piloting the RahXephon. Interestingly, his artistic ability contributes to his piloting skill, which is more effective as a performance than as a science, contrasting him with those who try to control the RahXephon through purely analytical means. He also demonstrates some proficiency in aerial combat simulations, though he is outmatched by a professional ace pilot. Ultimately, when he achieves true awakening, he fuses with the RahXephon and Ixtli to become the True RahXephon and reshape reality.
