Description
Kugaha is a character from the anime Noragami Aragoto who originally served the war goddess Bishamonten as a Shinki, taking the vessel form of a scale. Within Bishamonten’s clan, he acted as a doctor and apothecary, making use of an extensive knowledge of plants and medicine. While he initially appeared warm and diligent, gathering herbs and tending to the ailing, this gentle demeanor concealed a far more calculating nature. He proved to be cunning and manipulative, carefully weaving a conspiracy against his own master while exploiting the trust of those around him.

His primary motivation was to see Bishamonten killed and reincarnated, an ambition that aligned him with the stray regalia Nora and the shadowy figure known as Father. To achieve this, he slowly poisoned Bishamonten and her regalia, weakening them from within while maintaining his guise as a healer. He also maneuvered against key members of the clan: he tricked the trusted advisor Kazuma into revealing the aid he had secretly given to the god Yato, which led to Kazuma’s exile, and he orchestrated the death of the shinki Suzuha while corrupting another, Aiha. These actions caused chaos, culminating in numerous shinki being consumed by a Phantom.

Once Bishamonten discovered his betrayal, she revoked his name and exiled him, stripping him of his Shinki status. Kugaha did not vanish entirely, however, and later resurfaced as a minor antagonist who continued to oppose Bishamonten and Yato. His relationships within the story center on the master he betrayed, the fellow shinki he deceived, and the darker powers he served. There is no trajectory of redemption or personal growth; he remains a persistent threat driven by his original conspiratorial aims.

His most notable abilities stemmed from his role as an apothecary. Though he could transform into a scale like any Shinki, his real strength lay in his expertise with herbs and poisons. He used that skill to act as both a physician for the clan and a subtle assassin, mixing healing with harm in a way that made him especially dangerous because his cures and his weapons were often the same concoctions.
