Description
Bell Cranel is the central protagonist of the story, a 14-year-old human boy who stands 165 centimeters tall, with distinctive white hair and red eyes. His appearance is often likened to that of a rabbit, a comparison that follows him throughout his journey as an adventurer in the labyrinthine city of Orario.
Bell was raised in the countryside by his adoptive grandfather, who filled his head with fantastical tales of heroes and instilled in him a powerful dream: to have a dramatic, romantic encounter with a girl in a dungeon. After his grandfather passed away, Bell traveled to Orario to pursue this ambition. Shortly after arriving, he met the goddess Hestia and became the first and founding member of her Familia, taking on the role of its captain.
In terms of personality, Bell is generally good-natured, honest, and somewhat shy. He is polite to nearly everyone and struggles to refuse requests for help. However, he also possesses a deep, passionate side, fueled by a secret desire to become a hero, just like the ones in his grandfather's stories. This desire is inextricably linked to his feelings for Ais Wallenstein, a powerful swordswoman who saved his life early in his career. Bell fell in love with her at first sight, and this admiration became the single greatest motivating force in his life. He is not driven by a need to prove others wrong but by a genuine wish to become strong enough to stand beside the people he admires and to repay the faith others have placed in him.
Despite his dream of meeting girls, Bell is remarkably dense when it comes to the affections of others. While he remains singularly focused on Ais, he is largely oblivious to the romantic interest several other female characters, including his own goddess Hestia, show him. His defining trait is his pure and straightforward nature, which often manifests as empathy. He is known to openly cry at conflict, kneel beside distressed individuals to validate their concerns, and act as a vocal defender for those who are shunned or outcast, such as the Xenos, a race of intelligent monsters. This willingness to protect the marginalized, even when it makes him a target of his own city, solidifies his heroism.
Bell's role in the story is that of a rapidly ascending rookie, a "supernova" in the adventuring world. He begins as a Level 1 adventurer with no special talent, noted by his advisor Eina Tulle and even his own grandfather as being unexceptional. However, his pure-hearted wish to catch up to Ais awakened a unique rare skill called Liaris Freese, or "Single-Minded Pursuit." This skill allows his abilities to grow at an explosive, unprecedented rate, breaking the normal limits of the Falna system. His rapid growth is the source of much of the plot's tension, as it draws the dangerous curiosity of other gods and powerful figures in Orario.
Throughout the series, Bell develops key relationships that shape his growth. His goddess, Hestia, acts as a devoted and fiercely protective patron, while Ais Wallenstein serves as his distant, admired mentor. Bell trains extensively under Ais, which results in a fighting style that heavily emphasizes speed and agility, utilizing dual short blades and light armor. He also forms strong bonds with his Familia members, including the blacksmith Welf Crozzo and the supporter Liliruca Arde, as well as with the waitress Syr Flova and the strict Guild advisor Eina Tulle, who all provide him with crucial emotional and practical support.
Bell's development is both physical and mental. He suffers significant defeats and public mockery, yet he persists. He starts as a timid boy who runs away from a Minotaur but evolves into an adventurer who willingly faces overwhelmingly powerful foes to protect others. By the 18th volume of the main light novel series, he has reached Level 5. His progression is so profound that the total increase to his physical abilities by this point is equivalent to an entire level beyond his current rank.
Notable abilities include his chantless magic, Firebolt, which he can cast instantly. He possesses a second skill, Argonaut, born from his desire to be a hero, which allows him to "charge" his attacks and magic, greatly amplifying their power to deliver a decisive, heroic strike. He has even combined these abilities into a unique technique called Argo Vesta. In combat, Bell relies on his superior speed, often overwhelming opponents with a ferocious series of high-speed slashing attacks known as Rabbit Rush. He wields the Hestia Knife, a unique weapon crafted by the god Hephaestus that grows in power alongside its owner, making it the perfect tool for his ever-increasing strength.
