Description
Bete Loga is a first-class adventurer and a prominent member of the Loki Familia in the anime and light novel series. He is a Wolfman, a race of beast people, easily recognized by his tall stature, grey fur, wolf-like ears and tail, and the distinctive blue, fang-shaped tattoo on his left cheek. He is twenty-two years old.
Bete was born into a beastman tribe in the northern plains, the son of the chieftain who instilled in him the philosophy of survival of the fittest. When he was twelve years old, his entire tribe was destroyed by a dragon from the Dragon Valley, leaving him the sole survivor. Driven by revenge, he traveled to the labyrinth city of Orario and joined the Vidar Familia. He quickly rose through the ranks to become its captain due to his exceptional skills. During this time, he fell in love with his vice-captain, a human woman named Selenia. At the age of sixteen and having reached Level 3, Bete left to hunt down the dragon that destroyed his tribe. He succeeded after a long battle, but upon his return, he was devastated to learn that Selenia had died in an accident within the dungeon. This loss shattered him; he drove the rest of his grieving familia from the city and remained behind as a solo adventurer, descending into a life of drinking and fighting. He was eventually recruited into the Loki Familia after picking a fight with them in a bar, where the dwarf Gareth Landrock easily defeated him. Recognizing their strength, he accepted Loki’s offer to join.
Bete’s personality is notably abrasive, confrontational, and laced with profanity. He is a staunch realist and a powerful example of a character with a harsh exterior masking a caring interior. He holds an intense hatred for the weak, openly mocks and insults anyone he deems inferior, and is a firm believer in the law of the strong. However, this behavior is not born from pure arrogance but from deep-seated trauma. Having lost everyone he loved because they were not strong enough to survive, Bete has developed a twisted philosophy. His vicious verbal attacks are a misguided form of encouragement, an attempt to goad the weak into becoming stronger or to drive them away from the dangerous life of an adventurer altogether. He would rather be hated and hurt others with words than see them die because of their weakness. He also despises magic, specifically his own, and adheres strictly to a monster extermination ideology, showing no sympathy for creatures like the Xenos. His drinking is famously problematic; when intoxicated, his usual filters vanish entirely, leading to brutally honest and often cruel outbursts that he later regrets.
Bete’s primary motivation is to become overwhelmingly powerful to protect those he cares about, a goal driven by the pain of his past failures. He seeks to avoid any situation where he is powerless to prevent the death of a comrade.
Within the story, Bete serves as a significant foil and provocateur to the protagonist, Bell Cranel. Early on, he publicly mocks Bell for his weakness, an act that paradoxically hardens Bell’s resolve to become stronger. Bete’s opinion of Bell changes over time, evolving from contempt to grudging respect after witnessing Bell’s courageous stand against a Minotaur. In battle, Bete acts as a vanguard for the Loki Familia, utilizing his immense speed to take down enemies.
His relationships are complex. He has a one-sided admiration for his comrade Ais Wallenstein, drawn to her immense strength, though his personality constantly strains any potential closeness. He is rivals with Allen Fromel of the Freya Familia due to their similar aggressive temperaments. He frequently clashes with the Hiryute twins, Tiona and Tione, whom he views as undisciplined. The elf mage Riveria Ljos Alf often scolds him for his rudeness, which he reciprocates by calling her an old woman. Despite the constant friction, the leadership of the Loki Familia, including Finn Deimne and Gareth, understand that his harshness is a facade to protect others. A notable relationship is with Lena Tally, an Amazon from the Kali Familia who is deeply in love with him; Bete is outwardly irritated by her affections but has shown he cares for her deeply, going into a vengeful rage when he believed she had been killed.
Throughout the series, Bete undergoes gradual development. He begins as a bitter, isolated figure who aggressively pushes everyone away. However, through his interactions with Bell and his continued service in the Loki Familia, he begins to show small cracks in his demeanor. He learns to acknowledge the strength and resolve of others, and while he remains harsh, his actions increasingly reveal the protective instincts he tries so hard to conceal.
Bete is a high-level adventurer, having reached Level 6 after the expedition to the fifty-ninth floor. His stats are heavily weighted toward agility, where he boasts an incredible S rank, making him the fastest member of the Loki Familia. His fighting style is close-quarters, primarily utilizing powerful kicks augmented by his special custom-made metal boots, Frosvirt, which have the rare property of absorbing magic. He also wields a pair of short swords called the Roland Blades for slashing attacks. His unique magic is an enchantment spell called Hati, which cloaks his limbs in flames that feed on and absorb other magic and damage, converting them into more attack power. He despises this spell because it represents the pain and rage from his past, but he will use it as a last resort when his rage overcomes him. His skills include the rare Hunter skill, which improves his performance against monsters he has fought before, and Moonlight Howl, which triggers a powerful werewolf transformation that greatly boosts his abilities under the light of the moon. Other skills, Lone Wolf Chase and Twin Wolf Chase, further enhance his already formidable speed and power in combat.
