Maria Sarushima is a student at Suzaku High School, attending class 2-F. She is a returnee who lived in America, which sometimes causes her to mix Japanese and English in her speech. She has a younger brother known for his unique fashion sense. Maria is one of the seven witches, originally chosen as the witch of Premonition as part of Rika Saionji’s set. Her ability allows her to see a brief glimpse of the future through the eyes of anyone she kisses. However, this power became a burden after she foresaw a future in which she would be blamed for burning down the school building, causing her to become a shut-in and avoid attending school. Her personality is initially reserved and anxious because of the weight of her precognition, but she is kind and earnest. Her primary motivation is to free herself from her power so that she can experience genuine human connections and fall in love without knowing the outcome of every kiss. She asks Ryu Yamada to help her have her ability taken away, which sets off a chain of events involving the student council and other witches. Maria forms a close bond with Yamada and the other members of the Supernatural Studies Club, trusting them to change her foretold future. Over the course of the story, she undergoes significant development: with the help of Yamada, she is able to prevent the disastrous future she saw, and she willingly gives up her power to Tamaki Shinichi, the so-called Witch Killer. This allows her to move forward into a normal high school life, no longer isolated by her foresight. Her notable ability is precognition activated through a kiss, which she uses only sparingly due to its emotional toll. Maria is a tall girl with long pink hair that she usually wears in a ponytail secured by a yellow bow, and she has orange eyes. She is a supporting character who embodies the theme of learning to let go of supernatural gifts in order to embrace human relationships.
