TV-Series
Description
Alex O'Brien is a professional tennis player affiliated with the IMG Academy in Florida and is recognized as being among the top 500 players in the world. He is also the second seed at the Bradenton Open. Alex is the brother of fellow player Marcia O'Brien, and the two share a close relationship, with Alex often eating dinner with her at the training facility. As a roommate and friend of the series protagonist, Eiichiro Maruo, during Eiichiro's training stint in Florida, Alex serves as an important benchmark for the aspiring professional.
Personality-wise, Alex is portrayed as a dedicated and serious athlete, but also a sociable member of the dormitory, where he lives alongside other players like Taira and Krishna. He is observant, as shown when he and Taira listen intently to a conversation between Eiichiro and another player, Ike, about a point Eiichiro had managed to take during a previous match, indicating a professional interest in the skills of newcomers.
Alex's role in the story is primarily to represent the level of competition Eiichiro must overcome to succeed on the global stage. In their initial encounter, Alex easily defeats Eiichiro, demonstrating the vast gap between a junior player and a seasoned professional. This defeat serves as a critical learning experience for Eiichiro. However, by the end of Eiichiro's training tour, the two have a rematch where Eiichiro emerges victorious, though the win comes from Alex's ball landing just inches out of the court, highlighting Eiichiro's growth while also showing how narrow the margins are at a high level of play.
Alex possesses notable abilities on the court, including good overall speed, strength, and athleticism. He also demonstrates the capacity to evolve his playing style, undergoing a noticeable change in his tennis during his match with Eiichiro. His most distinctive technique is the Cyclone Smash, an extraordinarily powerful smash executed by jumping high into the air and twisting the body to generate immense force on the ball. Alex learned this technique from the Japanese professional player Echizen Ryoma during a stay in Japan to train himself.
