Description
Di Gi Charat, most often called Dejiko or Digiko for short, is the main protagonist and the princess of Planet Di Gi Charat. Her real name, Chocolat, is the name used in her native tongue, though she holds the royal title of Di Gi Charat. In the series Di Gi Charat Nyo, she is ten years old and has O blood type. She is a catgirl distinguished by her bright green hair, cat ears and tail, and a signature white and navy blue maid-style dress, an outfit that remains consistent throughout her adventures on Earth.

Dejiko's personality is defined by a striking contrast between her cute, frilly appearance and her often less-than-princess-like behavior. She is characteristically lazy, selfish, and quick-tempered, frequently shirking her responsibilities in favor of more self-serving pursuits. She has a pronounced sarcastic streak and does not hesitate to express her annoyance or anger, often with violent results. Despite these negative traits, she is not entirely without good nature; she can be helpful to her friends on occasion and, beneath her brash exterior, does possess a caring heart. Her love for sweets and candies is a notable weakness, and she is particularly easy to persuade when offered treats. A staple of her character is her verbal tic, as she ends nearly every sentence with the cat-like sound nyo.

Dejiko’s primary motivation in Di Gi Charat Nyo stems from her inadequate behavior as a royal princess. Her lazy attitude and troublesome actions, such as using her powerful eye-beams on her own servants and tutors, prompted her mother to take decisive action. To force her to mature, the queen sends Dejiko on a training trip to Earth, providing her spaceship with only enough fuel for a one-way journey so that she cannot return home prematurely. Her role in the story is largely that of an unwilling student of life and royalty, as she navigates her new surroundings while clashing with the expectations of being a proper princess. She resides and works at the Super Omo-chan Toy Store, where her hosts, Yasushi and Kiyoshi Omocha, care for her.

The character is defined by her key relationships with the other residents of the Lucky Cat Shopping District. She is accompanied by her younger assistant and fellow catgirl, Puchiko (Petit Charat), who is only five years old and much quieter, though sharp-tongued. The two share a close bond, with Dejiko showing genuine care for her despite her own self-centered nature. Also traveling with them is Gema, a floating yellow, ball-like creature who acts as her long-suffering guardian and tutor. Dejiko often uses her eye-beams on Gema, usually because she finds his lectures and nagging annoying. Her self-proclaimed rival on Earth is Rabi~en~Rose, whose real name is Hikaru Usada. Hikaru is an older, fourteen-year-old aspiring idol who sees Dejiko as a threat, though this rivalry is often one-sided, with Dejiko viewing her more as a persistent nuisance. The primary antagonists are the group known as the Black Gema Gema Gang, led by the young and impoverished Princess Piyoko from the rival planet Analogue, who aims to kidnap Dejiko for ransom.

Within the narrative of Di Gi Charat Nyo, Dejiko shows little in the way of traditional character development, as the series is largely comedic and episodic. Her core traits remain consistent throughout the 104-episode run. A significant plot point early in the series, however, is that her journey to Earth represents her first time attending any kind of school, an experience that she initially approaches with misguided enthusiasm. Her stay on Earth serves as a long and often chaotic lesson in humility, responsibility, and interpersonal relationships, even if she rarely learns from her mistakes.

Dejiko’s most famous and notable ability is her Laser Eye Beam, also referred to as the Me Kara Bimu. These powerful yellow or red beams are fired directly from her eyes and are produced from intense emotions, particularly anger and frustration. Her eye-beams are immensely destructive, with enough force to level an entire building, and she uses them freely on anyone who annoys her, including her friends, her rivals, and her guardian, Gema. Despite her royal status and catgirl traits, she possesses no other significant magical or supernatural powers, relying almost exclusively on this potent and violent ability to solve her problems.
