Description
Nanami Simpson is the central protagonist of the series, an eleven-year-old Japanese-American girl. After losing her mother at a young age, she lives aboard her father's marine research vessel, the Peperonchino, and travels the world with him. Her Japanese heritage comes from her mother, and her name means "seven seas" in Japanese, reflecting the ocean-focused life she leads.
Nanami is brave, lively, and kind. She has a deep and instinctive love for the sea and all its creatures, considering them her friends. This bond is most profoundly expressed in her relationship with Tico, a female orca that was rescued as a baby just before Nanami was born. The two share an unbreakable bond, swimming together every day. Through this daily activity, Nanami gradually gains the ability to hold her breath far longer than an ordinary human and to swim to exceptional depths. She communicates with Tico through a distinctive whistle and through body language.
Her main motivation is to support her father, Scott Simpson, a marine biologist who has spent years searching for a legendary creature known as the Luminous Whale. Scott initially seeks to find the whale, but after discovering the remains of one, his mission shifts to preserving the species. Nanami shares this goal and is determined to help protect the whale and the ocean environment. She is also driven by a desire to keep Tico safe and to foster understanding between humans and marine life.
As the main protagonist, Nanami drives much of the story. Her adventures with her father and Tico put them in direct conflict with the Gaiatron Corporation, a ruthless research conglomerate led by Adrienne Benex, who wants to exploit the Luminous Whale for a rare element. Nanami's courage, optimism, and connection to the ocean often provide crucial insights and help the crew overcome obstacles. Over the course of the series, she forms important relationships with other members of the Peperonchino's crew, such as the first-mate Al Andretti, the heiress Cheryl Melville, and the intelligent but lonely Thomas LeConte. She also shares a special bond with Tico's calf, Junior, born partway through the story.
Throughout the series, Nanami matures through her experiences. She learns more about the complexities of the world, including loss, the greed of corporations, and the importance of protecting nature. She also discovers a piece of her own past when she travels to Japan to search for memories of her mother. Her abilities continue to develop as she spends more time in the water, and her natural empathy with animals often helps her understand situations that adults overlook. She is portrayed as a friend to all living things, and her unwavering spirit is central to the crew's quest to find and protect the Luminous Whale.
