Description
Laocorn Gaudeamus is the main antagonist of the 1994 anime film Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. He is a young millionaire and a direct descendant of Gaudeamus, an ancient king of Rhodes Island who once wielded the legendary Armor of Mars. Laocorn has a twin sister named Sulia, who shares a psychic bond with him.
Laocorn's background is rooted in tragedy. After his father was killed by a jealous business partner during an expedition to find the Armor of Mars, Laocorn sought revenge. In the attempt, he was shot and his arm fell upon a piece of the armor, which fused with him. This event granted him supernatural abilities but also warped his mind, filling him with a consuming obsession. He became determined to reassemble all six pieces of the Armor of Mars, believing it would give him ultimate power and erase his feelings of weakness.
His personality is shaped by this transformation. Before merging with the armor, Laocorn was a good person who felt inadequate and weak. The armor's influence corrupted him, making him drunk with power and gradually losing his sanity. As he collects more pieces, his obsession deepens, and he becomes increasingly ruthless, using his wealth and his henchmen—Hauer, Jamin, and Panni—to pursue the fragments across the globe. Despite his descent, a part of his original self remains buried beneath the armor's influence.
In the story, Laocorn serves as the primary force driving the plot. His quest for the armor propels the heroes—Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and Mai Shiranui—into a race to stop him. Laocorn opposes them at every turn, eventually succeeding in assembling all six pieces at the Dead Sea. When he wears the complete armor, he gains god-like power and becomes encased in vermeil, taking on the persona of the God of War, Mars. This leads to a climactic battle where his sister Sulia, knowing their psychic link can weaken him, sacrifices herself by stabbing her own heart. The wound is shared with Laocorn, allowing Terry to shatter his breastplate.
The collapse of the armor reveals Laocorn's true nature. Freed from Mars's influence, he realizes he was used as a vessel for the god's resurrection. In a final act of redemption, he deliberately sacrifices his life to protect Andy and Mai from an attack by the revived Mars, thereby making amends for his actions. His development traces a tragic arc from a grieving boy into a corrupted villain and finally into a redeemed martyr.
Laocorn's notable abilities are entirely tied to the Armor of Mars. Wearing the armor grants him energy projection, invulnerability to physical harm, translocation, and the ability to manifest astral limbs for both defense and attack. When fully assembled, his finishing techniques include the Dark Blitz Ball and the Dark Kaiser Wave, moves derived from Wolfgang Krauser's fighting style. He relies on the armor for his power and inherits its ancient combat techniques.
