Description
Benkei Hanawa is a prominent character who first appears as an antagonist before evolving into a loyal and supportive ally. He is easily recognized by his large, physically imposing build and a big stomach, which contrasts with his genuine and sometimes soft-hearted nature. His short purple hair is almost always covered by a signature white beanie hat adorned with a red bull's skull, and his reddish-brown eyes complement his usual attire of a red and black jacket, gray shorts, and black shoes.

On the surface, Benkei projects the image of a tough and intimidating bully, a persona cultivated during his time as a leading member of the Face Hunters, a gang that stole Beypoints from weaker bladers. However, beneath this burly exterior lies a kind and good-hearted individual. He often tries to hide his softer side, such as his love for burgers or his moments of deep emotion, because he does not want others to perceive him as weak. Benkei is an energetic, enthusiastic, and remarkably determined blader who refuses to give up in difficult situations. He is also loud and expressive, occasionally getting into arguments with friends, but he is unable to hold a grudge for long.

The most defining aspect of Benkei's personality is his unwavering loyalty and deep admiration for Kyoya Tategami, the former leader of the Face Hunters. This devotion is so profound that he is frequently moved to tears by Kyoya's actions and can endure harsh treatment from him without resentment, immediately forgiving any transgression. This loyalty extends beyond Kyoya to his other friends, including Kenta Yumiya and Gingka Hagane, as he transitions from a rival to a trusted member of the main group.

Benkei's role in the story begins with him as a secondary antagonist, attempting to steal Kenta's Beypoints before being defeated by Gingka. After his leader Kyoya is taken away for training by the Dark Nebula, Benkei is given a new Beyblade, Dark Bull H145SD, by the villainous Doji, who urges him to defeat Gingka to prove his worth to Kyoya. Although he fails to win, this marks the start of his transformation. He begins training Kenta, forming a close friendship with him, and is subsequently expelled from the Face Hunters for helping their target. From that point on, Benkei becomes a steadfast companion to Gingka and his friends, fighting alongside them at the Dark Nebula castle and participating in the Battle Bladers tournament. His arc culminates in a battle against Kyoya where, despite his loss, his improved skills earn him the acknowledgment he always wanted from his idol. In later storylines, he joins Kyoya's team, Wild Fang, under the alter ego "The Masked Bull," and eventually retires from active blading to open a fast-food restaurant called Bull Burger.

Benkei's key relationships are the primary drivers of his character development. His bond with Kyoya Tategami is the most significant, evolving from simple hero-worship to a mutual, if often one-sided, friendship where Benkei provides unwavering support from the sidelines. His friendship with the young blader Kenta Yumiya is also crucial, as it is through mentoring Kenta that Benkei's inherent kindness fully emerges, leading to his break with the Face Hunters. He later develops a strong camaraderie with the protagonist, Gingka Hagane, and the mechanic Madoka Amano, becoming a reliable part of their circle.

Benkei's abilities are perfectly synchronized with his Beyblade, Dark Bull. He and the bit-beast Bull share an incredible connection, described as the "heart of a bull," which grants his Beyblade massive raw power for ramming attacks. Although Dark Bull is classified as a Balance-type Beyblade, Benkei uses it as a pure Attack-type, relying on powerful offensive maneuvers. His special moves include the Bull Upper, where Bull uses its horns to uppercut an opponent into the air, the Red Horn Upper, and the devastating Maximum Stampede, which unleashes all of Bull's attack power in a flaming aura. Despite his strength, Benkei's record in official battles includes many losses, and his Beyblade never undergoes an evolution, unlike those of many other main characters.
